The reality of appearances can deceive people and trick them into thinking that the best people are the worst, and the worst people are the best. In mind with that; reality of people versus their appearances shows greatly throughout the story The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. When the reader deciphers the question of appearances versus realities, they can see the differences between the reality of the characters, and the way that the characters appearances are portrayed by the townspeople in Kidd's book. In the beginning of the book, the main character Lily was deceived by her father, T. Ray. Lily knew that when she was younger, she accidently killed her mom when she was trying to protect her from T. Ray. When Lily later upsets T.
Ray. Lily got the answer from August that the book was asking. Why the appearances of people and the realities of people are different, which is because of clouded judgement. “Some mother,” I said. I felt hard inside. Hard and angry. “Will you listen to me for a minute? When your mother got here to Tiburon, she was practically skin and bone… All she did was cry for a week. Later we called it a nervous breakdown”… My mother had been looking for love, and instead she’d found T. Ray and the farm, and then me, and I had not been enough for her… August said, “After she’d been here for three months and was feeling a little better, she started talking about how much she missed you.
