Triffles is a play that I had to read and analyze multiple times. When I first received the assignment I googled a short synopsis of the play. After reading a short overview of the play. It took a few days to myself before reading the play. However by this time I had gained additional background information on the play. For instance, this play is roughly based upon the authentic murder investigation of John Hossack, who was likewise killed by his dismal spouse. Susan Glaspell, the author of Triffles was tasked with reporting on the murder. Stories suggest that Susan utilized the details of John Hossack’s murder as a muse, which I felt was a bit morbid initially. “ The kitchen in the now abandoned farmhouse of JOHN WRIGHT, a gloomy kitchen, and left without having been put in order—unwashed pans under the sink, a loaf of bread outside the bread-box, a dish-towel on the table—other signs of incomplete work.”- (Susan Glaspell). That is the first few lines in the opening scene of trifles, this set the tone for the story. For example the narrator refers to the clutter as unfinished work, which implies that it was someone’s duty to clean. Additionally the county sheriff and attorney consistently make snippy remarks concerning Mrs. Wrights housekeeping, often using that as a gauge of how good of a wife she was. Although the women try to defend Mrs. Wright however they must do so cautiously and prudently to avoid confrontation. Moreover, initially it is assumed that Minnie Wright has murdered her husband in cold blood without motive. However as the story unfolds, and the characters split up by gender of course, it is revealed that Minnie Wright was in a mentally abusive relationship. She dealt with the verbal mental abuse for years but when he kills her only friend, a singing canary.
