Essay On The Locavore Movement
The locavore movement, a drive for eating food that is locally produced, is constantly growing across the globe. Although there is controversy surrounding the locavore movement, the positives of abandoning general store food outweighs the hypothesized struggle for locavores to define what “local” means. Furthermore, the locavore movement offers more for the local economy and decreases need for mass production and transportation of food, implicating revival of small farms, decreased pollution, and increased food quality for citizens within the community. First, the locavore movement offers more for the local economy. Maiser found, “a dollar spent locally generates twice as much income for the local economy” (Source A). Instead of large, competing companies exploiting money from the community, money that is spent in the local area causes profits to double because it is used for both production and consumption of products locally. Furthermore, due to the locavore movement, “the number of small farms has increased 20% in the past six years” (Source E). When each locavore buys an item, he/she gives farmers and pasturers economic aid, allowing them to have reason and support to stay open and undeveloped. Offering more for the local economy, the locavore movement causes implications of renewed small farm rates and circulation of profits within the community.
