Essay On The Causes Of The Civil War
The Civil war began on April 12, 1861. The southern united states broke away from the northern half of the united states. The south became a confederacy. The immediate causes of the civil war were states rights, the election of Abraham Lincoln, and the expansion west. These were three of the main causes but what was the ultimate cause?

One of the first main causes of the civil war was States rights. Southern states believed that they should have the say of what to do in their state. The southern states wanted to abolish federal laws that they did not agree with. Northern states wanted to have the federal government in charge of what a state could do. The southern states wanted the right to decide on being a slave state.

The south wanted the west to be slave owning states. Many small fights broke out in the territories out west over free vs slave states. For four years in Kansas violence and killing took place over the issue.

Finally, the main cause of the civil war was ultimately slavery. Southern states relied on slavery for their agriculture. The north was a free and did not rely on slavery because of a majority of factories. Southerners economy would collapse if they lost their slaves and northern wanted them to give them up. Slavery was the root cause of all the division in the country. Every cause the north or south had stemmed from slavery in some way.

The north and the south both split away in April of 1861. This is the beginning of the civil war. Southern states broke away from the north for many reasons. Some of the main reasons the south broke away were states rights, Abraham Lincoln being elected, and expanding westward. Ultimately the main cause of the civil war was slavery. Slavery was the cause of most of the problems the north and the south had. Without slavery, the war may never have

The other main reasons are the control of the government, economy, states' rights, abolitionism, and the election of 1860. Although the focus revolved around slavery a lot of the tension that led to the war was from how the South felt it had no power when it came to making decisions. “As new states were added to the Union, a series of compromises were arrived at to maintain an equal number of “free” and “slave” states” (Hickman 1). However; as new states were added they were all being declared “free” states without the South having any say in the matter. Fearing they were losing power the South turned to the states' rights argument, stating that the federal government didn't have the right to change the laws of slavery in states whom already own slaves (Ayers). Things grew worse during the abolitionist movements which called for an end for slavery, whether it be immediate or gradual. This caused many disputes among the people which often led to biblical disputes (Hickman1). Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin should the cruelty of the Fugitive Slave Act and gave support to the abolitionist movement. The election of 1860 was the final straw. With the election of Abraham Lincoln as president, they feared all was about to change. “The North with its growing population and increased electoral power had achieved what the South had always feared: complete control of the government by the free states”(Hickman 2). After the election the South immediately began to discuss seceding from the Union. The secession of the South was the ultimate leading factor for the North to go to war, in order to keep the country united…

There are several things that play into why the Civil War started, although the overall burning issue was slavery. Many people argue that the Civil War started over states rights. But when you look at it the states rights were to abolish or protect slavery. This problem seemed to arise as the north became more industrialized and the south stayed predominately agricultural based. As the north began to look towards a city life people began to work together as one.…

One of the most important causes of the civil war in my opinion would have to be the Nullification Crisis of 1832. This Crisis was unlike many others due to the people it involved, and the way the certain people handled the situation. In 1832, President Andrew Jackson was one of the primary founders of the democratic party. Jackson was a major supporter of states rights, but that all changed during the Crisis in 1832. This crisis was a confrontation between South Carolina and the federal government.…

If asked, most people would blame as the cause of the civil war the issue of slavery. This is understandable; many people in the U.S. at the time were against slavery, going to far as to help runaway slaves escape to the free north. But, while slavery at face value was a major factor, international politics and economics played a major role. Several factors, including the election of Lincoln, the raid on Harper 's Ferry, the Dred Scott decision, and, most importantly, the fugitive slave law, contributed to the growing rift between the North and South and, eventually, the Civil War.…

The causes of the Civil War are many, the obvious being slavery, however that is merely on the surface. The underlying causes were far more detrimental to the health of the union, the main cause being money. The economic disputes between the North and the South, which were partially over slavery, were the root to the South seceding. The resentment felt by the South towards the North, because of the growth of cities, ports, and the economy there in general, in addition to the idea of the abolishment of slavery, which would put a serious dent into the economy of the South which was already struggling led them to secede. It has been said that money is the root of all evil, and it certainly is in this case.…
