Essay On Sports Injury
Injuries in sports have become a regular occurrence that most believe to be “just part of the game.” Any person who has played a sport has encountered some type of injury, whether that be an ankle sprain or a torn ACL. Recovering from that injury can be a draining process. The recovery process is a journey of highs and lows, but recovering from the physical injury is not all the athlete have to worry about. Depression, isolation, and lowering of self-esteem are all common mental health effects of athletes who pour their heart and soul into the sport and then become injured. Injuries can alter the course of an athletes career, not only hurting them physically but also mentally, which often times takes longer to recover from. On the outside, athletes look like they are incapable of failure and never any self-doubt, but when an athlete goes through an injury one of the biggest issues that they have is that they feel as if they have failed. Feeling as if they can not do anything can lead to depression. While the majority of athletes will notice their negative emotional feelings diminish over the first month following the injury, approximately 5 to 24% of athletes will have clinically …show more content…
Players focus on listening to the positive voice inside their head and learn to push away the negative thoughts. However, after an injury the negative thoughts become more prominent in their mind and they begin to lose self-confidence. The injury may not even be that serious, but for most athletes even staying out of their sport for just a few weeks causes great distress. Without being in the sport that they love, they begin to lose their identity. Athletes no longer know what to do or how to act around their teammates because they no longer feel worthy to be part of the team. Consequently, the more dedicated the athlete is to their sport, the easier it will be for their self-esteem to diminish when faced with

    In a country that thrives on competition it is no wonder Americans have embraced football as their favorite sport. Every weekend during football season, millions line up, tune in, or change the channel to watch their favorite teams do battle for 60 minutes. It is a rough physical game and at the collegiate and professional levels, played by some of the worlds best athletes. There are many dangers involved when participating in such a sport. Rarely will a player go through a game without being hurt in some capacity. This is part of the game and everyone involved knows it. Because of this, players often have to be the judge of whether they are “Injured”, or “hurt.” The difference being that someone who is just hurt can still perform physically and should be able to return to the game. However if a player is injured, this means that they have been hurt to the point where they are not physically able to play, or to the point that further play could escalate the injury into something much more serious. For most injuries this distinction is easy to make, for instance a sprained ankle can either be ran on or it cant, depending on the extent of the sprain. One of the most common sports-related injuries is a concussion.     To reach the goal of being a top athlete one must devote their life to the sport, this means having an identity that revolves around their sport. Many fear that if their identity will be lost if they stop playing to heal their body. This idea resonates most with my experience in sports, I was afraid of losing my identity. What and who would I be without soccer? This same fear keeps many athletes in the game, for fear that they are nothing without their physical skill.
