A spinal anesthesia injection might also be used to numb the crotch area or the doctor will use anesthesia. Uterus is then held in place with an instrument. Then the cervical canal is dilated. Then a hollow tube is inserted into the uterus. The tube is attached to a pump to remove the tissue. Then forceps are placed into the uterus to grab bigger pieces of tissue. Then the Uterus lining is gently scrapes to remove more tissue. The surgery is now complete and medicine will be provided to reduce the amount of bleeding. The Doctors may do an ultrasound to make sure all of the tissue was removed. After the surgery there will be Irregular bleeding and pads should only be used. Dilation and extraction is another surgical procedure. This involves a luminaria to be inserted vaginally to dilate the cervix two days before the procedure. This causes the water to break on the third day. The fetus is rotated and forceps are used to grasp and pull the legs, shoulders and arms through the birth canal. A small incision is made at the base of the skull to allow a suction catheter inside. The catheter removes the cerebral material until the skull collapses. The fetus is then completely removed.
