When one hears the words “sorority” or “fraternity,” what comes to mind? A big house, nice clothes, or even pillow fights? Some sororities may have these things, but that is not what they are about. Sororities and fraternities have been sweeping over college campuses for years and are beginning to take over even more campuses. Katie Lambert, who wrote the article How Sororities Work, stated, “For many, a sorority or fraternity can be a great way to make lasting friendships, build a smaller community within a university setting, and find opportunities for leadership and service.”
Many colleges and high schools don’t inform students about sorority and fraternity life which is why students typically don’t know what they are until they decide to join one. Many frequently asked questions about sororities and fraternities include; what are the differences between sororities and fraternities? Will joining a sorority or fraternity benefit students after college? Will the student’s academics be in jeopardy if they joined a sorority/fraternity? What purpose do sororities and fraternities serve on college campuses? What is the process of joining a sorority or fraternity? What is the history of these two groups? The similarities above are done differently than each other. For structure, sororities have more strict rules and schedules while fraternities are pretty laid back and just follow the events and schedules. Sorority outfits can range from T-shirts to dresses and wedges or high heels. Fraternity outfits consist of nice shorts and a button up shirt. On bidding day, potential new members rank the sororities they want and hope they make the final list that goes into account of bidding. For fraternities, the potential new members have interviews by fraternities of choice and, if chosen, will have a party dinner. This leads to the purpose of
