Jennifer Bussey’s Critical Essay on “Snow Falling on Cedars” analyzes the similarities and differences between Ishmael Chambers of Snow Falling On Cedars, and Ishmael from Moby Dick. To begin her critical essay, Bussey states, “Comparing Ishmael and Ishmael Chambers is important because it shows the reader how Ishmael Chambers’ life could have been different.” Bussey compares the adventures both men took. Ishmael Chambers fought in World War Two, while Ishmael chased a whale. She then goes on to compare their relation to the world claiming, “Both men are essentially alone in the world.” Finally, Bussey contrasts the lives of the two men, arguing that Ishmael from Moby Dick is open to the world, while Ishmael Chambers feels isolated.…

The overall structure and plot of the story plays a part in how Wolff viewed his own life within the characters. It opens with a simple yet intriguing statement: "Tub had been waiting for an hour in the falling snow" (Wolff 1). Immediately, this hook does its job drawing the reader into the story and making him wonder what is going on. In the same paragraph we find that Tub is walking down the street, carrying a rifle and seemingly, shooting the breeze. But then a car comes from nowhere, nearly killing Tub and forcing him to leap off the roadside. Inside the truck, Tub's friends, Kenny and Frank, wait laughing at the apparent "joke" that they had just played. Tub doesn't seem quite as amused, stating, "You could've killed me!" (Wolff 5). Then, the three friends begin to make their way towards the woods to go hunting for…

In the two texts, “Snow” by Julia Alvarez, and “The Skater” by Annie Dilliard, the two characters in the stories had very different views about snow. As one was very scared and thought snow was a horrible thing, the other one thought that snow was a very beautiful thing in the world. These two texts have one thing in common, each character sees the snow in different ways, but by the end of the story, their views change. The characters thoughts change by the end of the story, thus meaning that each character is dynamic.…

As an active member of the network, I will ensure the safety of those who contribute to the community by participating in it. Far too many times have I seen overwhelmed staff being bombarded with questions that they don't get the chance to answer, and I want the privilege of staff to take partial weight off of their shoulders. A community runs on those who love it, so what better way than to benefit the community by not only the personality you add to the network, but the…

I was six years old when my father strapped me into my first pair of skis, “Skiing is way more fun than snowboarding. Little did my father know I would later become a snowboarder at the age of twelve, following the example of my mother and two brothers. During my junior year at age sixteen, I joined the brand new snowboarding club at Blackfoot High School. Although the club only functioned for a year, I realized that small, northern towns like Blackfoot Idaho were full of winter sport fanatics. This thought brought a question to my mind; are there schools in the U.S. that have snowboarding as an actual high school sport? After more research on the subject, I found that only a few private boarding schools around the country offer snowboarding as an actual school sport. Public high schools usually include sports that require physical exertion, competition and a way to generate revenue like football, basketball, soccer, baseball, volleyball and much more, so I asked myself; why not snowboarding?…

The movie Snowpiercer contains several interesting sociological concepts. The plot of Snowpiercer follows a 2014 experiment to counteract global warming, which inadvertently causes another ice age that kills all life on Earth save for the inhabitants of the “rattling arc.” The “rattling arc” being a train that perpetually travels on a globe-spanning track. On the train a class system is put in place where the elites inhabit the luxurious front compartments of the train and the lower class inhabit the squalor-ridden rear compartments. When analyzing this film, some may be compelled to view the parable the plot is trying to convey as one about economic inequality between the upper and lower class. However, it is much more than this. The true…
