Growing up in the United States it is a requirement to learn about the history of our nation. One of the biggest events of our history would be the slave trade. In the events of slavery there have been many names of important heroes that ended slavery which include one of the most significant, Fredrick Bailey (Douglass). In his story “Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass”, Douglass explains in great details his horrors and accomplishments living as an African American during that time.
Slavery started in 1619 when Africans were brought to America to help produce and maintain tobacco products. All of the history books made it clear that slaves in the South were treated worse than their northern counterparts. If a slave was brought to the North then they were considered lucky. The northern states eventually drew the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. A lot of events and people made this possible through hard work and education. “My natural elasticity was crushed, my intellect languished, the disposition to read departed, the cheerful spark that lingered about my eye died; the dark night of slavery closed in upon me; and behold a man transformed into a brute!” This quote from his narrative is the best example of the mental and physical pain that slaves endured during this time. Fredrick was considered one of the few privileged to be raised in the North where the people were more understanding of his needs as a human being not just a black man. He was educated but also beaten into submission by his owners. He bought his freedom at the age of 21 and set his life goal as educating all people of the inhumane slaughter and descent of his people.
