Essay On Service Dog Training
Service dog training has always seemed fun and interesting to me. Most who do it do not do it for the money but for the happiness it brings to them and the good things it results in. I think it is an interesting career because I get to work with and train dogs to help people with a certain need. I plan to be a service dog trainer because I love dogs and I would love to spend time working with them for a good cause. Service dog trainers use practical teaching skills combined with the knowledge of animal behavior to train dogs for a specific job. Dog trainers must be very communicative with owners who take classes with their pets. “A good trainer can clearly convey training methods and plans with the owner to increase their effectiveness” (Kramer).

The median salary according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2015 is $26,610 (Statisitcs). A well experienced trainer may earn up to $60,000 a year. Due to the small amounts of money and little time trainers work the time to get another job is available. Though service dog trainers make little money, getting a job should be no problem. The job outlook for future jobs in service dog training will have grown 11% by 2024. There is a high turnover rate for many trainer positions. The hardest field of animal training to go into is the marine mammal training (Statistics). By the year 2024 the most desirable job would be in the management, scientific or technical consulting services. The work places that would be ideal to work in are animal shelters, circuses, aquariums, horse farms and zoos. Service dog training is like being a teacher but for dogs. I believe this job to be solely for the purpose of training dogs for a good cause, not to make great sums of money. It requires a teaching degree, and a few years of apprenticeship. To get to a higher salary than what is started with it may take a year or two until one is considered an experienced dog trainer, and getting into the dog training field should be fairly easy, the job outlook is in good shape.
