When comparing different medical shows, the NBC comedy show “Scrubs” is commended by doctors for being the most accurate medical show on television. Hidden underneath the jokes and the cartoonish sequences of “Scrubs” are real plots and real stories of what actually goes on in a hospital. Every case in a hospital is different - some are dramatic, like the ones found on shows like “ER” and “General Hospital”, and some cases are boring or typical, like the ones found on “Scrubs” (Weiss). Though “Scrubs” may be an accurate show, it is still just a show. So, what is it really like to be a doctor? In order to be a doctor, you must first become a doctor. First, you must obtain a Bachelor’s degree in virtually anything, though it would be more practical to obtain a degree in a science or a math. At some point during the undergraduate years, a student takes the MCAT exam which, based on how well the student scores, determines which medical school the student will attend. Studying
It is not, however, the only aspect of being a doctor. Being a doctor is like being a superhero. Human lives literally lie in the hands of doctors - this can be a wonderful thing or a terrible thing depending on the person. One bad decision can lead to a person dying and this is the aspect of the medical career path most doctors do not seem to talk about. Sure, the salary is great and it surely allows for bragging rights, but being a doctor is slightly terrifying. It is a job that demands a high-level of confidence and concentration. One should become a doctor with the best intention - to help people. If one becomes a doctor because they want to make a lot of money, there is no ambition to actually help people get better and more patients suffer because of this. Doctors are always needed; the job opportunities are not scarce. As long as you are good at what you do and enjoy doing it, a career in medicine will be wonderful in the long
