The very first hardship that Gretchen faced was in the very beginning of the book where her brother’s friend almost hit a Jew driving on the way to tea and once the car stopped Reinhard(Gretchen’s brother) and his friend got out of the car to beat the innocent jew, but Gretchen made the courageous decision to save him.
