I assume it all began with my grandmother. Starting at 4 years old, I would watch her battle with her illnesses and always want to offer a helping hand. As a matter of fact, I never anticipated being a nurse, I constantly say nursing discovered me. It was all confirmed once I began clinical in nursing school; that’s where my compassion for ministering to the ill found a place in my heart so deep it gives me butterflies. Throughout achieving my Associate’s Degree at St. Paul’s School of Nursing I have learned that nursing is not just treatment of disease with medication and procedures. It is a work of the heart, a combination of knowledge and compassion, and the gift to deliver it in a way that most benefits the patient’s and their families. Sometimes, what we yearn for can seem too far away or just too hard to reach. As I attempt to reach my goals I may face some barriers. If I want to reach my goals, I will have to get around them. Time management and finances are two barriers that prevent me from completing some of my short-term goals, i.e. bachelor’s degree and certification in ACLS and PALS in a well-timed manner, I work 10 days in a 2-week period from the hours of 3pm to 11pm. With work occupying most of my time its hard for me to focus on more than 1 class at a time and to make it to a certification class. As for my long term goals, having the suitable qualifications to acquire and hold the title of certified oncology pediatric nurse and nurse practitioner can be a barrier. Attaining a job in adult oncology to fulfill the requirement to have completed 1,000 hours of practice, something I cannot get without being qualified to be hired on an oncology unit would inhibit me to achieve my goal as a certified oncology pediatric nurse.
