Essay On Nursing As A Career

Nursing is a second career for me. It is one I have approached gradually, over a long period of time. I might have chosen it as a first career if I had been a better student when I entered college, or had people in my life who were involved in healthcare careers when I was growing up. As it was, I had a longstanding interest in health and the human body, but nursing seemed very foreign, and the idea of touching strangers made me uncomfortable. So when I came to UNC as a freshman in 1982, I declared myself a Business Administration major by default. My sister had done the same thing when she went to college, and it seemed like a respectable major. It didn’t take long for me to realize that while the business classes were challenging and had a whole new feel, they didn’t inspire me with a vision for a career. I loved the curriculum and thrived in the smaller environment. Learning about the healthcare field and preparing to play a role in helping people achieve wellness was exciting. That the curriculum dovetailed nicely with the things I had already been studying in business, and that I wouldn’t have to touch anyone were two great bonuses. Much has happened since I graduated from the School of Public Health in 1986.
