Narcotics have been used for many years. Narcotics have been known to be used since at least 4000 B.C. Opium, have been used for centuries to produce pain relief. Two narcotics that come from opium are morphine and codeine, which are two narcotics that are still widely used for pain relief. Narcotics may have been used for pain relief for many years, but it is also known to be extremely addicting. There are many different narcotics. Some narcotics are heroin, oxycodone, morphine, and codeine. Heroin, oxycodone, morphine, and codeine are all most commonly used as a pain relief. They are also used to reduce stress and anxiety. Some symptoms of narcotics withdrawal are agitation, anxiety, muscle aches, nausea, and vomiting (“Opiate Withdrawal”). These symptoms are not life threatening, but they are uncomfortable. Along with the symptoms, there are also treatments. One treatment that is used is the harm reduction strategy. This strategy involves giving methadone to those dealing with the withdrawal symptoms. Methadone is given to the addicts because it reduces the narcotics “rush”. It helps reduce the negative consequences of addiction without having to instantly stop drug use. Another harm reduction strategy is to give addicts clean needles in order to reduce possible harm they could do to themselves. These harm reduction strategies are very controversial. Some people believe that these strategies are just feeding the drug users addiction. Other people think these strategies are good because it lets the addicts use clean and safer materials. These clean materials, such as needles, help the addicts not cause even more harm to themselves by getting diseases or other things from used, dirty
