Essay on my greatest accomplishment.
One of my most cherished assumptions is that all goals are reachable if you work hard to achieve them. I believe with dedication and faith, any person can accomplish what they set out to do in life and become a winner.

Throughout history there were many people we considered winners, who, in fact, lost many times in their lives. A newspaper editor fired Walt Disney because he had "no good ideas." Even though he hit 714 home runs, Babe Ruth struck out 1,330 times. Thomas Edison performed more than 1,100 unsuccessful experiments before inventing the light bulb. He said, "I found out 1,100 ways how not to do things." Even the great racing horse Secretariat lost his first race.

I can remember a time when I so desperately wanted to win, but I didn't. My sixth grade class was having a spelling bee. Every student had to stand at the front of the room with his or her own mini chalkboard. When Mrs. Berberich, my teacher, said a word, everyone had to spell it on his or her chalkboard at the same time. If you misspelled the word, you were forced to sit down at your desk and keep quiet. At first I did not see the enjoyment in the exercise. In fact, I can distinctly remember drawing dinosaurs on my chalkboard while my teacher explained the rules of the spelling bee. It wasn't until I heard the words "McDonald's Extra Value Meal" that I looked up and saw the bright yellow McDonald's Extra Value Meal certificate that would be given to the winner. In sixth grade, it was cool to be eating a Big Mac and not a Happy Meal. The spelling bee that was about to start all of a sudden became important to me. My hand was ready to spell out any word that came out of my teacher's mouth.

I ended up becoming a spelling machine! My teacher kept putting up new words, and I kept knocking them down. I wanted the McDonald's Extra Value Meal and I was going to get it if it killed me. My teacher had given us more than 20 words and I had spelled every one of them correctly. The problem was, so had someone else. Chelsea was her name. She was all that stood between my McDonald's Extra Value Meal and me.

With only one person left to beat, I could practically guarantee the victory. As Chelsea and I stood ready and waiting, Mr. Coon gave us the final word: extravaganza. I knew this one! The McDonald's Extra Value Meal was mine for sure, or so I thought it was! E-X-T-R-A-dot, dot, dot...and that was as far as I got on my chalkboard. I didn't know the rest of the word! I sounded it out as best I could, but still failed to put the letters together. I lost the spelling bee and Chelsea won the McDonald's Extra Value Meal.

That day I was devastated. I felt like I'd failed. However, looking back now, I realize that I didn't really lose. I went into that spelling bee with everything I had, but I didn't win. However, life's a lot like that. It's not really about whether you win or lose, succeed or fail, but it's about how you approach any situation and see yourself as a winner.

Maintaining a positive attitude is key to life, but it definitely is not always easy. Perhaps it's failing a test so completely that you want to quit the class; but instead you study twice as hard because you are determined to do better next time. Or maybe it's about losing a basketball game because you miss two free throws in the final seconds, but you still want the ball in your hands because you know you can make your shot the next time. No matter what happens in my life, I cannot afford to let my failures get me down.

Michael Jordan once said, "I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed." When I leave to go out into the real world, to work as a teacher, I am going to face many challenges and changes. I have a choice each day about how I am going to approach life: either avoid difficult situations and give up, or face life with a positive attitude and see myself as a winner because I gave it my best shot.

It's strange. The most life altering experience I've ever had is one of the few I can't recollect at all. I pride myself on my ability to remember in detail pivotal events in my life. Kindergarten, my first day at primary school, all like photographs tattooed in my memory so I'll never forget, but they would all have been nothing without the preceding event. This is why I find it odd.…

Life is comprised of a series of learning profound learning experiences. On that stands out occurred last year in seventh grade. Two friends and I decided we wanted to try something new, to learn how to play basketball! We made that decision mainly because we wanted to do an activity together for the winter term, and seventh graders didn't have the option of doing the winter school play. We were very hesitant; only one of us had any experience playing basketball, and we didn't think it would be very fun to run up and down a court trying to get a ball in a hoop. Still we kept an open mind and began to learn how to play.…

In my 5th grade, I won the class spelling bee, beating a good grade school friend of mine. The rules were that the winner, and the runner up of each grade would go on to the next stage. Within the next week was the grade competition. We gathered in the school conference room for the competition. My 5th grade companion lost early in the competition, but I continued on. All I could do is spell the words the best I could, and hope for the best. Low and behold, I won, despite going up against kids older and more knowledgeable than…

Every day I wake up determined to do more than I did the day before. My past achievements include gaining leadership skills, being on a varsity sport, and learning outside of school. I have been in tennis for eight years and varsity for three years, where I have received two awards for most improved player. I was accepted into the program “Trees for Tomorrow” where I learned how to manage and use natural resources in a classroom and in field studies. I participated in a new sport, a cross country ski team, where it taught me skills and strengthened my mind set about myself. My early years of high school, I was part of the backstage crew for a play, performed at my high school. The theatrical plays were terrible, under equipped, with barely…

A personal accomplishment that I believe sets me apart is that I graduated high school in three years instead of four. I had to complete courses in Summer School and take extra subjects instead of fun electives , but in the end it was all worth it because I was able to start learning more about subjects that pertain to my career in college classes a year early. When my peers were taking it easy I decided to push myself and take all AP or Pre-AP courses so that I could better prepare myself for the change in difficulty in coursework that I would encounter in college. I believe this also sets me apart because I was born in El Salvador and had to learn English as a second language in school. After finally mastering the language , I proceeded to…

According to Kim Skinner on KYA, “It’s a life lesson, how do you teach your children to be good winners and good losers if they don't win and lose? I feel sorry for kids that never learn disappointment. How will they handle life? Like not getting the job they wanted, etc.”. In other words, if children don’t have experience losing, it makes losing as an adult more difficult. Furthermore, Ashley Merryman in her paper Losing is Good for You states, “Carol Dweck, a psychology professor at Stanford University, found that kids respond positively to praise; they enjoy hearing that they’re talented, smart and so on. But after such praise of their innate abilities, they collapse at the first experience of difficulty. Demoralized by their failure, they say they’d rather cheat than risk failing again.” and she continues to build on his views with support, going on to explain that having experience in both winning and losing is much more important in a child’s developmental health. What kind of expectations will they have on the world? By telling children that they will be rewarded regardless of achievement correlates directly from a sports environment into a work and educational environment. These children will grow up believing that they deserve a rewarding future set up for them no matter what, where in reality they have to learn to work hard and strive for success…
