Does Minimum Wage Help Workers

October 28, 2017 Minimum wage laws were initially put in place to stop employers from taking advantage of workers, especially in times of economic downturn. Since its establishment the minimum has been increased many times and each time it has been debated on if there is a need to increase the minimum wage or have the laws at all. The benefits of having minimum wage laws are greater for workers as a whole and outweigh disadvantages that come with them. When talking about minimum wage laws the main point brought up for not having them is that they increase unemployment by forcing businesses to pay above a certain amount. Having a minimum wage can force businesses, especially small ones, to pay more for a low-skill job than they are able to. This can lead to businesses having to lay people off or not being able to …show more content…
The main benefit of a minimum wage law is that employers can’t extort workers who may be willing to work for wages quite a bit below the cost of living. This increases the quality of living of the workers as they have to be paid at least minimum wage which can be made in accordance with the cost of living. Minimum wage also decreases the amount of people who need welfare or wage supplements as they are guaranteed a certain wage with any job they get. Therefore, workers tax money can go elsewhere which will further benefit the workers. There are many advantages and disadvantages to minimum wage laws but overall the laws benefit the workers more than it hurts them. While minimum wage can lead to unemployment it also increases the quality of life that workers receive due to a base line wage that they are guaranteed. As long as the minimum wage is set to the needs and cost of living in an area it will end up helping workers much more than it will hurt
