The plant is rundown, old, dirty, and dangerous to work in. However, it is the only job Jurgis can get, considering he’s not from the country. He looks through all the negatives of his job, and continues to work, so he can bring money home to Ona. This is a clear sign of his courage and love for his wife; he is willing to do anything to help her survive.

The last main thing that makes Jurgis a hero, is how he reacts when he is told that Ona has been sexually assaulted. He goes out in town and beats the man that he believes has hurt his wife. He knows that he is risking jail time, but fights for Ona anyway. After he beats the man, Jurgis does face jail time for 30 days. He always helps his wife fight her battles, and puts his needs first.

Jurgis is the true hero of The Jungle. He makes sacrifices for others, and works for his wife. In the novel, he ends up losing his entire family. During all the rough times, he continues to keep moving forward and trying his hardest. Putting others before you is a hero thing to do. Jurgis falls right into the hero

Upton Sinclair had always insisted that The Jungle was misread but did he ever think it could have been miswritten? The style of writing is not effective when addressing issues in a capitalistic society but proves to be very effective when exposing the secrets of the meatpacking industry. The novel is not remembered for being a classic work in literature but rather an important book in history in that it changed the way America looked at food in the early part of the century.…

    1) I would not go as far as to say someone is a hero in this story, because there really wasn’t a villain, but I have to agree that if anyone would be called a hero, it should be Jonathan. He revealed a world and a past the other characters (mainly Alex) have never seen before. For example, he was the reason the true horrors of the holocaust were revealed to Alex and his Grandfather. When they went to find Trachimbrod, Jonathan grandfather’s Jewish hometown, and found Augestines sister, her recap of how Augestine was killed was something Alex could never imagine dealing with. But as to how Jonathan is a real hero, I guess he sort of saved people…
