The theory of caring came from Jean’s own thoughts on how nursing should be viewed. She wanted to bring meaning to nursing knowledge, and values through the process of caring. She implemented what she called carative factors, which means to appreciate, give special attention, and to cherish. There are ten carative factors Jean implemented in her theory of caring and are as follows:

I incorporate this theory to my nursing practice every time I go to work. Whether I am working in the Intensive Care Unit, or in the Emergency Department. When I show a patient I care about them it changes the way they feel and their perspective of me. Jean believed nurses were forgetting why they entered into the nursing profession, and I can see this too. As a nurse it is important to stop and think why you entered into the nursing profession. For me, it was because I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives, and through the act of caring I am rewarded. Patients respond better when you show them care and compassion, and I will continue to use Jean’s theory throughout my nursing
