Hades Report Hades was the Greek god of the underworld and was in charge of all that was under the earth. He was considered the god of all the riches under the earth, from precious metals to agriculture and good soil. He guarded over all of the dead and kept order in the underworld. Hades was one of the oldest sons of Kronos, and is considered one of the “Big Three,” along with Zeus and Poseidon. Hades dwelled in the underworld, as opposed to all the other gods who dwelled on Mount Olympus. He had many loves, including Persephone, Minthe, and Leuce. He resided over the entire process of judgement after death, and the consequences that followed. Although he is not the most featured, or famous god, Hades had a lot inside his sphere of power,
For example, after his wife died, Orpheus came down to the Underworld to appeal to Hades to let his wife come back from the Underworld. Hades had the power to do so, and allowed Orpheus to take his wife back with him. Hades had one condition for Orpheus, and because Orpheus didn’t listen, Hades kept Orpheus’ wife in the Underworld. Another story where someone comes to Hades for something but leaves without it is the story of Theseus and Pirithous. Pirithous takes Theseus with him down to the Underworld with the hopes of abducting Persephone to be his wife. Hades catches Pirithous and Theseus and keeps them in the Underworld in chains. Hercules descends to the Underworld and is able to save Theseus, however he is stopped before he can save Pirithous. Because Pirithous committed the more evil act, by instigating, he was forced to stay in the Underworld to endure eternal torture. These stories are very unique to Hades because of his specialty. Hades is one of the most strong and fascinating Greek gods. He has a lot of power in his sphere of control from controlling the dead to controlling the living through agriculture.
