Culture is described by the set of beliefs and behaviors shared by a group of people that is passed down from generation to generation. Culture is important to cognitive, social-emotional, and physical development because it shapes the experiences that children are exposed to and influences a child’s perception of their surroundings. Depending on where a child grows up and who they are surrounded by influences certain values and skills that are passed down by past generations. Moral differences and parenting styles are only some examples of how cultures differ from each other.
Culture is important because it is passed down to children by parents and members of society. One generation to the next passes down teachings to children in each culture. Infants are born with basic mental functions that are enhanced by the influence of their parents and their culture. Cognition is affected by the values and beliefs that are influenced by a particular area. Interactions between parents and children are vital for infant’s cognitive development. Culture determines how and where the developmental interaction between child and parent takes place. Cultural beliefs also influence cognitive development. Puberty is universal across the world, however social milestones such as beginning school varies between cultures. Physical appearances, such as race and racial stereotypes can have great impacts on a child’s development. In a society that is much racialized children become aware of the dynamics of racism at a very young age. In some cultures children are doing more physical duties in their community which affects their physical development. Another example of a particular region affecting a child’s physical development is a child that is growing up in a poorer country that does not have enough food to eat to reach optimal development, resulting in many children becoming malnourished at a young
