Essay On Cosmetology Technician
Coming up as a child you’re always asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I had the same answer, “I want to be a pediatrician or a hairstylist.” Those are definitely two completely different professions, however both always intrigued me. Then I took a health class in high school and it fascinated me! I learned so much about human anatomy and the body’s capabilities. But my adolescent mind was disgusted by the class as well. With these new discoveries came bodily fluids, disease, contagions, and worst of all death. I remember thinking to myself I wouldn’t be able to handle the death of a baby or a child. My plans for the future started to shift and after high school I enrolled in Cosmetology school. Cosmetology school was so much fun! The days were long; however you learn multiple styling techniques. Including but not limited to: shampooing, conditioning, pre-treatments, cutting techniques, professionalism, customer service, business management and human biology. Who would of thought? Once again, that medical field tinge ran through me. But I didn’t pay it enough mind. I completed school with good grades. Took the state exam and became a licensed cosmetologist. I started off as a full time stylist working at a hair salon with aspirations of becoming a shop owner. That changed over time …show more content…
When all of the sudden it hit me… the medical field. I have matured enough to handle my adolescent day concerns. I am a mother, a nurturer and naturally care for others and their well being. Once I complete my certification, my goal is to work in an OBGYN or Pediatric office. I find the women’s reproductive system captivating and astounding and I simply adore children! Either way, I will be happy and making money; and that’s my ultimate

After reading Peter Cappelli article “Why focusing too Narrowly in College Could Backfire” I started to think about my own educational goals and why I chose to be a hairstylist. When I graduated from high school I attend beauty college, at that time the beauty industry was booming. There was a salon on every corner. There was always walk- ins and new clients available for stylist. Now with the social media craze like YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram, the African American salon business has fallen because social media outlets. These outlets, teach ordinary people how to do their own hair, and caused stylist to lose clients. We also have the natural hair movement, that took clients that would normally come into the salon for hair weaves and relaxers, and are now wearing their hair in its natural state and don’t need the salon anymore. Another major down fall to African American salon industry was manufacturing companies like L’Oréal and Shea moisture that promotes salon quality products on YouTube for the naturalista. These were a few major changes that happen in…

To be a cosmetologist you have to have your high school diploma, and complete a state licensed barber or cosmetology school. “To get your license, certifications, and registrations you have to reach the age of 16, have a diploma and graduate from a barber-cosmetology school”(careersinfocus). A course depending on where you go and how hard you try for it usually takes up to 50 weeks to complete. 50 weeks in my opinion is not a lot of school and i feel like there should be more education for people who want to further their career in cosmetology.
