I beleive theme is the main idea of a story or book. The story ¨A Worn Path¨ is about an elderly woman named Phoenix, she travels a long way to get medicine for her grandson. Phoenix's grandson swallowed lye and is very ill, while Phoenix travels to get the medicine she comes across many obstacles that does not stop her. I believe the theme of ¨A Worn Path¨ is with great sacrifice come reward. I believe this is the theme because Phoenix sacrifices herself to get the medicine for her grandson and she gets rewarded along the way. One of the obstacle that Phoenix has to overcome is how long the journey is, one man in the story thinks it is too far for Phoenix ¨Why, that's too far! That's as far as I walk when I come out myself, and I get something for my trouble.¨ To start the journey Phoenix has to go through a forest, climb a hill, and walk across a creek on a log, ¨At the foot of this hill was a place where a log was laid across a creek. Putting her right foot out, she mounted the log and shut her eyes.¨ Nothing is stopping Phoenix from getting the medicine for her
The nurses take Phoneix and ask her how her grandson is. ¨My little grandson, he sit up there in the house all wrapped up, waiting by himself.¨ They give Phoenix the medicine and an attendant gives her nickel and back on the journey Phoenix goes, ¨Five pennies is a nickel, said Phoenix stiffly.¨ ¨Here's a nickel, said the attendant.¨ The long and tough journey had to take not for her self but for her grandson is definitely sacrifice. She faces near death experiences multiply times during that journey, from walking across a lake on a log, getting stuck in a ditch with no one in sight to help, or when the man pointed a gun at her. Phoenix stayed persistent and didn't give up. Phoenix was reward for not giving up not only did she get the medicine for her grandson but she also got ten cents. With great sacrifice comes
