Describes the combined set of all letters in the alphabet and the numbers 0 through 9. It is useful to group letters and numbers together because many programs treat them identically, and differently from punctuation characters. For example, most operating systems allow you to use any letters or numbers in filenames but prohibit many punctuation characters. Your computermanual would express this rule by stating: "Filenames may be composed of alphanumeric characters."

Sometimes additional characters are considered alphanumeric. For example, on IBM mainframesthe characters @, #, and $ are considered alphanumeric characters.

For example, the capital letter A is ASCII character 65, the numeral 2 is ASCII 50, the character} is ASCII 125 and the metacharacter carriage return is ASCII 13. Systems based on ASCII use seven bits to represent these values digitally. In contrast, most computers store data in memory organized in eight-bit bytes. Files that contain machine-executable code and non-textual data typically contain all 256 possible eight-bit byte values. Many computer programs came to rely on this distinction between seven-bit text and eight-bit binary data, and would not function properly if non-ASCII characters appeared in data that was expected to include only ASCII text. For example, if the value of the eighth bit is not preserved, the program might interpret a byte value above 127 as a flag telling it to perform some function. It is often desirable, however, to be able to send non-textual data through text-based systems, such as when one might attach an image file to an e-mail message. To accomplish this, the data is encoded in some way, such that eight-bit data is encoded into seven-bit ASCII characters (generally using only alphanumeric and punctuation characters—the ASCII printable characters). Upon safe arrival at its destination, it is then…

The character set most commonly used in computers today is Unicode, a global standard for character encoding. Internally, Windows applications use the UTF-16 implementation of Unicode. In UTF-16, most characters are identified by two-byte codes. The less commonly used supplementary characters are each represented by a surrogate pair, which is a pair of two-byte codes.…

A file name is a name assigned to a file in order to secure storage location in the computer memory. Whether the file system has an underlying storage device or not, file systems typically have directories which associate file names with files, usually by connecting the file name to an index in a file allocation table of some sort, such as the FAT in a DOS file system, or an inode in a Unix-like file system. Directory structures may be flat, or allow hierarchies where directories may contain subdirectories. In some file systems, file names are structured, with special syntax for filename extensions and version numbers. In others, file names are simple strings, and per-file metadata is stored elsewhere. A file name is a name assigned to a file in order to secure storage location in the computer memory.By this file name a file can be further accessed…
