Essay: I Want To Pursue A Biomedical Engineering Degree
I have always been drawn toward STEM, especially biology. Recently I’ve been fascinated, in a disbelieving sort of way, with prosthetics. I’m frustrated by slow pace of advancements in both prosthetics and the inability to overcome paralysis brought on by neck and back injuries. I think that we need to focus on better methods of sending signals to nerve endings to simulate natural movement, which I understand scholars at Case are working on currently, but I also would like to see us focus on the seemingly trivial concern with how to attach a prosthetic. It seems very Captain Ahab-like to belt on a prosthetic limb. Prosthetics should not just be a poor substitute for losing a limb but instead something that completely replaces your lost limb in a way that does not serve as a barrier. So a person is able to walk again and does not feel less than whole. …show more content…
I attended an information session and toured campus. The Case School of Engineering and the Pre-Professional Scholars Program in Medicine, in particular, intrigued me. I have been looking for a college that presents a way for me to bring together my interest in medicine with design and human welfare, leading me to biomedical engineering. I learned that the concept of biomedical engineering was developed at the Case School of Engineering. The chance to be able to attend the university where this started and to combine that with a path to medical school under the Pre-Professional Program for Medicine would allow me to fulfill my dream of having a career that focuses on helping people recover from paralysis or the loss of limbs. Case Western presents the perfect opportunity for my goals, and I respectfully ask to be considered for the Pre-Professional Program for

I chose to pursue a STEM degree for multiple reasons. First, my lifelong goal is to attain a career where I can help others. All humans were placed on this Earth the same way, and no one deserves to suffer from life-threatening diseases and illnesses. I believe that I can help others by researching diseases, illnesses, and finding cures. Therefore, I'm double majoring in microbiology and medical laboratory science, and plan on becoming a clinical pathologist. Science always intrigues me, and the human body continues to amaze me every day. Strangely, we live in these bodies our whole lives, but still don't know how to cure certain diseases affecting the body. Granted, many advances continue to be made in the medical field, however, I would like…

When people hear “pre-medicine,” they think of majors like biology, chemistry, biomedical engineering, health sciences, and other popular majors. I chose chemistry as my major, not only because I wanted to stand out not blend in, but also because I am aware of my strengths and weaknesses. I have always performed better in chemistry than in biology. I prefer challenges and I love the way chemistry challenges me. I am going into freshmen year with the knowledge of the level of difficulty that my major encompasses. I need to remain focused and work hard in order to succeed and achieve a solid gap of at least 3.6 for admission to medical school.…

As a child growing up I think I always wanted to work in the medical field, seeing my mother as a LPN. I also have always had a natural interest in the medical field because I like to watch a lot of ER and hospital shows. At first I didn’t really know what health career I wanted to pursue. I just knew that I liked being in the healthcare class and learning about the different health science careers and what they do. I think a medical office administration assistant would be a very good career for me because I am very helpful and can always be counted on when people need me. This is not my only career choice, it’s just the first I want to pursue. One year after graduation I will hopefully have my medical assisting certificate or at least be working on getting it. Around my five year mark I want to try to get a degree from a nursing school and become licensed as a registered nurse. After that I will try to specialize in pediatrics, so I can be a pediatric nurse. In ten years, I want to get my nurse practitioners license, so that I could work directly with a pediatrician.…

This demonstrates my commitment and capability to cope with challenging situations and be an effective team member. A hospital placement was an invaluable experience as I witnessed medical synchronisation by shadowing medics and how they form the backbone of science. My core subjects inspired me to do an EPQ on 'Can engineering help with the early diagnosis of dementia?'. My EPQ draws on many aspects, such as how advances in medical imagery can help diagnose Alzheimer's disease earlier. Being a future ambassador of STEM and taking part in organisations like the 'Stemmettes' and 'WISE' has shown me that University will give me the tools to succeed in the biomedical industry. Through workshops I participated and had created 3D simulations and built artificial organs using technology and understood the necessity of using mathematical models to develop drugs. Being involved in the 'BP Day' allowed me to demonstrate practical and creative skills which in turn led me to win the title of 'Modern muse challenge for most original innovated designer for an app'. Tackling biomedical engineering as my undergraduate degree has been a challenging and exciting experience. Though a rigorous endeavor, I am thankful for all it has offered and believe it has extensively prepared me for my future in medicine. My upper-level math courses have demanded a high level of critical thinking to understand abstract concepts, thinking I know will be useful when invoked to conceptualize in unconventional ways as a physician. The biomedical engineering curriculum I have undertaken involves a complex array of quantitative and analytical approaches to human systems. Comparing physiology to foundational engineering concepts has enhanced my understanding of the ways in which medicine and the human body function. Classes such…
