Essay Comparing Rainsford And Zaroff
Characterization is the process of an author developing a character's qualities or personality by describing him or her in a fictional story. In the short story “ The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, Sanger Rainsford, a hunter, is trying to keep himself alive on Ship Trap Island, where a nefarious man named General Zaroff is hunting him for sport. Rainsford and Zaroff the two men going toe-to-toe are shown through characterization that they contrast and compare from each other.
The two characters, Rainsford and Zaroff, contrast from each other because they come from different countries of origin. Once Rainsford arrives at Ship-Trap Island and meets Ivan at the door of Zaroff’s chateau he says, “I am Sanger Rainsford of New York” (4). Upon meeting with Ivan at the chateau, Rainsford explains to him that he is a foreign traveler from America and is in need of assistance. On the other hand, Zaroff and his father are from Russia where “He [Zaroff’s

Immediately upon arriving at Zaroff’s chateau, he greets Ivan at the door by saying, “Don’t be alarmed. I’m no robber. I fell off a yacht. My name is Sanger Rainsford of New York City” (4). Since Rainsford is only looking to find help, he communicates with Ivan at the chateau to tell him that he is not from here and needs and would like a shelter to be in for the night. Even though the quotes state that Zaroff is an insane individual, he reassures Rainsford by telling him “Come,” [Rainsford] “We can talk later. Now you want clothes, food, rest. You shall have them. This a most restful spot” (4). Before bombarding Rainsford about his hunting “passion” Zaroff wanted to take good care of his guest while he was with him at his chateau on the island. Thus, Rainsford and Zaroff, two different characters are distinct from each other they share a common similarity

One difference that these characters have is how they hunt. Rainsford hunts animals and travels to hunt these prize animals, but on the other hand Zaroff got tired of hunting animals. In place of hunting the animals, Zaroff prefers to hunt humans and this is the “game” that he plays with the people that he traps on his island. Another difference that these characters have is the places that they live. Rainsford lives in New York City, but Zaroff lives on Ship-Trap Island. The last difference that these two characters contain is their personalities and how they treat people. Rainsford is very kind and friendly. He has friends that he likes to travel with and hunt, and he hunts for fun. Zaroff on the other hand is rude. He treated Rainsford and anyone else that ended up on his island kindly and was a good host until it was their time to play the “game.” Then he treats them rudely, and he gives them no reason to like him. He is very demanding and does not let anyone make their own decisions. He forces people to play the “game”, and if they refuse then they are turned over to his servant, Ivan, who tortures…

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Jury, I am Jack Oberman, and I have the privilege today to prove Mr Rainsford guilty of assault and third degree murder without any reasonable doubt. According to Mr. Rainsford’s witness statement, he fell off of a ship and swam all the way onto the island. He then met Mr. Zaroff and henchman Ivan. Mr. Rainsford claimed they hunted humans on this island. Rainsford then says Zaroff forced him into being hunted. During the period of the 3 nights he managed to evade Zaroff, alleged hunter. In the process of evading Zaroff he attempted to kill Zaroff in self defense, but in the process killed Ivan and one of Zaroff’s hounds. After the 3 nights were up, the supposed end game, Rainsford swam around to the other end of the island, climbed into Zaroff’s room, and killed him.…

Ultimately Zaroff can be characterized as Mysterious and cruel. First off one way Zaroff is mysterious is he already knows who Rainsford is without ever meeting each other before. Conelle page 44, “It is a very great pleasure and honor to welcome Mr. Sanger Rainsford, the celebrated hunter, to my home… I am General Zaroff.” As you can see from this quote Zaroff is excited to meet Rainsford and immediately wants to get to know him better. My second reason is Zaroff acts strange in general around Rainsford. Conelle page 44 “The menacing look in his eyes did not change… a black uniform trimmed with gray astrakhan.” By this quote you can tell Rainsford is feeling uncertain and curious of him. You can also tell by his first reaction he is in some…

Rainsford wakes up the following morning. Everything in the house is quiet, and he feels alone. Rainsford gets up out of bed and he feels an ache in his neck from something hard in the pillow. He lifted it up to find a knife with blood stains sitting under the pillow. Rainsford didn’t know what to do next, but he knew last night was one of the best he’s ever had. As he sits in the dining room and eats out of fine china, he thinks he might as well give hunting humans a try since killing two the last few days didn’t hurt him at all. He starts walking outside and locates the cellar that holds all the other prisoners from crashed ships. Whenever he walked in, the captives hopped up in excitement thinking they were being rescued because it was someone other than Zaroff walking in.…

Rainsford will not take over General Zaroff’s game of hunting other humans. For instance, when General Zaroff asks Rainsford to go hunting, he says, “Thank you, I’m a hunter, not a murderer.”(25) Rainsford classifies himself as someone who hunts animals, but not humans. He disapproves of General Zaroff’s game and most likely still does. In addition, while Rainsford is being hunted, he thinks, “The Cossack was the cat; he was the mouse. Then it was that Rainsford knew the full meaning of terror.”(31) Rainsford is truly afraid at this point just like other humans are when they are being hunted. He has had the horrifying experience and probably doesn’t want anyone to feel this fear. As a result, Rainsford is a gentleman and animal…

When Rainsford first meets Zaroff, Zaroff is courteous, hospitable, and honorable; he takes Rainsford in, gives him clothes, dinner, wine, and a place to stay. However throughout the course of the evening and dinner, Zaroff's character takes a drastic and radical darkening. "The weak [men] of the world were put here to give the strong pleasure," (Connell 799) says Zaroff over a glass of wine. "I am strong," (Connell 799) he continues to say. Zaroff hunted captured humans as a hobby and a sport! Rainsford is appalled at this, and Zaroff eventually continues to tell Rainsford of his intention to hunt him: "You'll find this game worth playing...Your brain against mine. Your woodcraft against mine. Your strength and stamina against mine. Outdoor chess! And the stake is not without value, eh?" (Connell 801). Zaroff is so corrupt that he doesn't even understand what he is doing is wrong; he appears so nice on the outside, but his words and actions show his…

Rainsford is a very tough person both mentally and physically. Rainsford shows his physical toughness by swimming to Ship-Trap Island. The reason why Rainsford even met Zaroff is because he fell off a yacht when he dropped his cigar and stumbled off of the boat. He was nervous so he just decided to swim until he got to land and then he remembered “A certain cool-headedness had come to him: it was not the first time he had been in a tight place.”(15). Rainsford got all the way to Ship-Trap Island and he found Zaroff’s house and that is how they met. Rainsford also shows toughness by not giving up on going through the forest, “Rainsford had fought his way through the bush for two hours: “I must keep my nerve”, he said through tight teeth.” (26). This situation would take a lot of mental toughness because anyone could just have a nervous breakdown because they could die and it takes physical toughness because you could get cut up from walking through the forest for two hours. After Rainfords gets to the cliff he swims to Zaroff’s house which is very clever and brave. Rainsford also fights Zaroff because he hates what Zaroff has done. He kills Zaroff in the fight and this definitely proves that Rainsford is a tough man. Raonsford’s mental and physical toughness save him from Zaroff, who he has a conflict with because Zaroff is a…

Characterisation is a vivid description of a person's appearance and character. This is presented through their actions, speech or thought. The novel 'A New Kind of Dreaming' by Anthony Eaton uses characterisation to portray the issue of abuse of authority and power through the antagonist Sergeant Butcher. Sergeant Butcher is a powerful high ranked policeman in the isolated town Port Barren. The author urges us to question whether we would report the crimes with the repercussions that would follow, or to keep quiet.…
