As stated before their mission statement is “Family Service & Guidance Center provides quality behavioral healthcare for children and families.” (Family Service and Guidance Center, n.d.) This seems very general to me, our textbook states “the mission statement should convey the nonprofit’s essential purpose, approach, and values, distinguishing it from other organizations.” (Tschirhart & Bielefeld, 2012, p. 45) Per this definition I don’t think it’s a good mission statement as it doesn’t have the values, approach, nor does it distinguish itself from other organizations. I believe they could have a better statement that would allow them to show effectiveness within their evaluations and show that they do have values and approaches that are consistent with what they are providing to the…

Definitions of child maltreatment vary among the literature because the lack of homogeneity in what constitutes child maltreatment differs by country. Though one consistent part of every definition was that child maltreatment is the physical, psychological and sexual abuse, and neglect inflicted by adults towards children (Butchart, Harvey, Mian, Furniss & Kahane, 2006). To further grasp this issue you need identify and understand the definitions of each sub category that makes up child maltreatment: Physical abuse is often difficult to identify as there are many different cultural acceptances, religion. Children may also feel loyalties to parents and siblings, which often prevent the open declaration of the levels of abuse that actually exist (Butchart, Harvey, Mian, Furniss &…

Millions of children in the world have dealt with or seen someone they know deal with abuse. There are many different types of abuse. Sexual abuse, verbal abuse, physical abuse and neglect are all different types of ways a child can be caused harm. In reading of “Breathing Underwater” by Alex Flinn and “A Child Called It” by Dave Pelzer, I found that child abuse was a common theme between the two. The main character in each book was abused or harmed in some type of way by their parent. Child abuse can have many long lasting effects on its victims. The way a person is raised plays a major role on the way they deal with things in their adult life such as problems, relationships, and parenting. In this essay, I will explore the positive and negative effects of child abuse.…

There are so many cases of child abuse and neglect throughout the world that it is being called an epidemic. Neglect is defined as “a type of maltreatment that refers to the failure by the caregiver to provide needed, age-appropriate care although financially able to do so or offered financial or other means to do so” (Child Neglect). The two main categories of neglect are physical and emotional (psychological). Out of the two types of neglect, emotional (psychological) neglect has a greater impact on children.…

According to the American Psychological Association, there are four million victims of elder abuse each year (APA Article). Elder abuse is defined as any form of mistreatment resulting in harm or loss inflicted on any older person age 65 or above (google definition and cite source). The different types of elder abuse include sexual, physical, financial, verbal, psychological, or emotional, neglect, and financial exploitation. Regardless of the type of elder abuse one experiences, it jeopardizes any victim’s quality of life as it causes a decline in functional status, poor self-rated health and quality of self-care, psychological distress and dependency (CITE). Elder abuse is considered a complex trauma because it involves repetitive or prolonged…

Healthy relationships are based on love, equality, and respect while abusive ones are based on neglect, power and control. People abuse their partners either because they have experienced abuse themselves or because they grew up seeing someone being abused and perceived it a normal behavior. Usually men who are unable to make an emotional connection with the woman they choose to be intimate with are unable to allow themselves to love for fear of abandonment or betrayal. This defense mechanism could have been created in a man who has been abandoned by his mother, or due to being badly treated by a woman who he once truly admired and loved. Often abusive men appear to be the most loving people on earth but they struggle with getting rid of those…

In today’s society violence and abuse have become a huge problem. It can be mental or physical abuse. Abuse can happen in any kind of relationship: boyfriend/girlfriend, parent/child, or employer/employee. The one area of abuse caught my eye is foster parents abusing foster children. This past year I know of some personal cases where the foster parents abused the foster children and have even killed one. In the journal “Confidentiality Act to Shield Abuse in Foster Care” it states, “As Miguel’s brain swelled with blood, his foster parents waited more than four hours before they took him to the hospital. The child, whose body was covered in bruises, never regained consciousness. He died in the hospital before his biological family could be located” (Callahan). People like this is what is hurting the foster care system the most.…

“How would you feel if you spent your entire childhood being shipped from one foster home to another?” Many kids get sent from home to another all the time in foster care some kids will have lived up to 10 different homes before being adopted. Lots of kids get put into foster care to never be adopted and then have no family. My topic is controversial because people have different views on how the foster care system should be ran. Although many people think the foster care program is fine as it is, more control is needed over how foster parents handle things, because 13% of all foster kids run away at least once, Most kids in foster care are victims of some sort of child abuse, and kids wait a long time to be adopted.…
