Essay About Littering
It has been something we have been dealing with for a long time. It almost seems impossible to get rid of it, and we hear about it almost everyday. Littering. Littering has become such a regular problem that almost nobody cares about it anymore. Littering is wrong, and really harmful to everyone and the environment. There are three reasons why I believe this is so. One of them the reasons is that over 9 billion tons of litter end up in the ocean each year. Another is that littering is a waste of money. Finally to people that smoke, littering cigars is very toxic to the environment.

Litter in the Ocean Litter in the world causes a lot of problems, especially in the world’s oceans. According to the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection of Australia, there is an estimated 100,000 marine mammals and sea creatures dying due to litter in the oceans around the world each year. The most common item littered in the ocean is plastic. According to World Ocean Review and their article on Ocean Pollution, “The statistics are alarming: the National Academy of Sciences in the USA estimated in 1997 that around 6.4

According to a poll conducted in Tennessee , only 50% of smokers claim to properly dispose of a cigarette. This means that the other 50% of people don’t dispose of it properly and are harming the environment.
Most of the time smokers litter their cigarettes is while driving. They tend to throw their cigarette out the window and act like nothing happened. This is a very wrong behavior not only on the environment but on the person too. According to the Gedling Borough Council in England, "It is estimated that 40% of the litter in the Borough is smoking related, be it wrappers, cartons or cigarette

Cigars are one of the main problems many smokers do not have ashtrays in their cars so they let the ash go out the window and then when they are done they just throw the cigar out. By doing this the cigar is still lit and could cause fires to happen. Schools are also another area where littering is a problem, many students believe that they can just leave their trash because janitors will pick it up for them but most of the time the trash attracts unwanted guests such as birds and rats, and by leaving their trash them that it is fine to litter and someone will pick it up for them always. So once again many people do not treat littering as a crime and millions of people do it and by littering could hurt animals that live near the place being littered and could start…

This visual argument was made to catch the attention of the smokers and let them know that they are not only hurting themselves, but they are hurting the environment. After reading a couple of articles about how much cigarettes affect the environment I can see why they made this visual argument. The article that stood out the most is an article by Jessica Taylor-Cassan, “How Smoking Affects our Environment.” Jessica is an ex-smoker that took the time to research what cigarettes do to the environment. In her research she found out that it takes one tree to produce 300 cigarettes. Can you imagine how many trees they cut down a day just to supply smokers. The trees are not the only things being affected. When people throw their cigarette buds on the ground it pollutes the soil. Smokers are not only hurting themselves, but they are hurting the trees that help people breath. Smokers are also contaminating the soil that the living trees need to grow.…

The scientific realm of ocean trash and its impact has been left horrifyingly untouched and is only now being taken up. Consequentially, we have been oblivious to the negative affects of this issue to the point where (1) the largest landfill on Earth is situated in the Pacific Ocean, known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Although we lack a proper understanding, it is still an enormous threat to our planet and to us as humans, a fact that we seem content to be ignorant of. Already, there are (2) well over five trillion known scraps of garbage amuck in the ocean. Another moment cannot be spared if we are to do something. The immense amount of ocean trash afloat has caused concerns for marine life, human health, and even economy. As long as…

Ocean pollution is such a broad topic, and one that has many facets to it. As a group, we found it to be a very intriguing topic that it relevant to our everyday lives. As New Jersey residents, we have all spent time at the Jersey shore. We have all enjoyed the small and big beach towns, the sand, and of course the ocean. Recently, we have each noticed reduced pollution and cleaner water. Then we read article after article on increased pollution, damaging toxins, deteriorating health and wellbeing of sea life. How can this be, with all the scrutiny and awareness placed on litter and pollution is general. Then we realized that it was more than just leaving a plastic bottle on the beach or failure to through away a paper wrapper. In fact, it is more damaging than this. It is more so about the toxins and chemicals that seep into the land, the runoff from building and homes, the ground and air pollution that comes from industry and factories, and the pesticides that are evident in farming and everyday lawn care.…

As we all know smoking causes death, it causes death more than HIV, illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, suicides, and murders combined. It causes lung cancer deaths in men and women. 90% of men and 80% of women die from lung cancer each year that percentage is way too high. Something needs to be done about cigarette smoking as soon as possible. The world allows cigarette smoking to continue on, they try to ban it in certain areas but allow it to be done in other areas. For example at many colleges they do not allow you to smoke on the premises of the school grounds, but they will allow you to smoke as long as you are in your car with the windows rolled up. That makes no sense at all, you are still smoking on school grounds and nobody ever abides the rules anyways. They will smoke in their cars but with the windows down, or they will just smoke on school grounds. The same goes for work buildings, big businesses, high schools, and etc. Cigarette smoking needs to be banned!…

If you are a litterer you can get fined anywhere from $20 to $30,000 dollars. But more importantly littering pollutes the water making it unsafe to drink and even swim in. This is true for not only bodies of water but for groundwater as well. Littering and places with a heavy amount of littering threatens the wellbeing of people and animals. It attracts diseases, bacteria, and veromon. But above all litter attracts more litter. People are most likely going to throw trash on the ground if they see other pieces of trash. Littering can also be a fire hazard. All you would need is a pile of trash and someone to come along and throw a cigarette down on the ground.
