Essay About Drunk Driving
Drunk driving is one of the most dangerous activities you can partake in because it can not only deprive you of life and happiness, it can also affect others in huge ways. According to the information given in the lesson, alcohol can start affecting you in a major way after as few as twenty minutes. These effects include slower reaction times and impaired judgement which can be extremely dangerous because you are not aware of the risks you are taking and how your actions affect others. You can be affected by as little as one drink so if you will be driving at all, don’t drink.

The video “Lives Affected” is full of interviews of people that have been affected by drunk driving. Some of the boys in the jeep survived but Christopher burned to death before he could be saved. Christopher’s family are extremely sorrowful about this accident. It was very obvious to the drunk driver that there was an object in his path, but he was so impaired that he did not stop. If alcohol causes you to run into objects that are not even moving, it is very dangerous indeed.

Watching these videos and hearing these stories has reaffirmed my determination to never drink and drive. If you do drink and drive, you run a high risk of harming yourself and others, and it is simply not worth it just to drink. I will never drink and drive, but I will be aware of the possibility that others might and I will watch out for them on the road. Hopefully the drunk driving problem can be reduced so we do not have such a large problem

Schmadeke states, “A speeding, unlicensed driver who crashed into another car on the Northwest Side, killing a mother and her teenage son and injuring three other children, was sentenced Monday to 15 years in prison” (Schmadeke 1). Because 37 year old, Richard Strum decided to drive while intoxicated, he took two innocent lives and injured three others. He not only took a mother, but he also took a daughter, sister, and wife. It is thought that drunk drivers have a long history of doing this and many prior arrests. In addition, most of those killed are just innocent victims whose behavior did not contribute to their deaths. These last two statements are both false. On average a drunk driver that kills has never been involved in a alcohol related accident before and have no prior convictions for drunk driving. The part about the people killed are just innocent bystanders is over-exaggerated also. Most of the drunk drivers victims are the drivers themselves, and often their passengers, but hardly ever the bystanders. It is the leading cause of unintentional injury deaths in North America today. In fact it is said that about 40 % of the population will be involved in a alcohol related crash during their life. Drunk driving is especially dangerous to young people, who seem to be more involved than others. The injuries and deaths sustained each year by drunk driving can be prevented. Those who choose to drive while impaired, have been informed of the dangers, however, decide to ignore the harsh facts. They will eventually end up facing injury or death to themselves or, even worse, someone else. This is a reality some choose to ignore until they are forced to live or die along with the consequences.…
