Angry people
Rob: Jennifer: Rob:

NB: This is not a word for word transcript

Hello and welcome to 6 Minute English from bbclearningenglish.com. My name is Rob and I'm joined in the studio by Jennifer. Hello. In today's programme we are talking about anger – that's the strong feeling you get when you feel someone has treated you badly or unfairly. Does that sound familiar Jen? Oh yes. There are many things that make me lose my temper – usually just things that annoy me. We'll hear what they are soon and we'll look at why some research says our modern life is making us angrier. But first, keep calm Jen and see if you can answer today's question. It's OK Rob, I'm in a good mood – I feel happy – so let me have it! OK. In a BBC survey, what was found to be the thing that made British people most annoyed? Was it: a) Someone jumping the queue b) Delays on public transport c) Being kept on hold by a call centre

I'll go for c) being kept on hold by a call centre because that's very annoying. OK, well, we'll find out if you're right at the end of the programme. Jen, you say that annoys you, does anything else annoy or anger you? Public transport annoys me but it's the passengers that I find most annoying especially when they push and shove and cram onto a train. How about you Rob? Well, for me, it's got to be rudeness. It really makes my blood boil when people who work in shops are rude to me, the customer – it is as if they don't want me to buy anything! But I suppose that is quite small compared with things that used to make us angry. Yes. Humans developed the feeling of anger as a basic survival skill – the emotion of anger helped us to do things – so hunger would make us angry and that would make us to look for food.

Donald Halls’ “A Hundred Thousand Straightened Nails” is a symbolic presentation of the decay of New Hampshire the author uses the life of Washington Woodward to show the pointless existence that is experienced in a place as lifeless as New Hampshire. He uses the contrast of his own opinion and the beliefs of Woodward to show how after a while it is impossible to escape a pointless mindset. Washington finds joy in discarded relics such as old nails, and wood, and finds simple joy in simple life. He settled on life, in his lifeless town and spent his life with his animals, his stories, his beliefs and his box of “A Hundred Thousand Straightened Nails.”(Hall)…

Our feelings and emotions and our likes and dislikes give our life meaning. That which makes us happy or unhappy, fulfilled or dissatisfied to a large degree decides our course of action and our health. Diseases not only make us feel unwell, but negative and suppressed emotions and feelings are a major contributing factor in causing our diseases. Certain emotions are traditionally linked with problems in certain organ functions. Anger, for example, damages the liver and conversely, irritability and quick temper are partly caused by liver problems.…

After watching a few commercials from this year’s Super Bowl Football game, the one that caught my eye the most was the 2012 Chevy Silverado Apocalypse. It was humorous, creative, and got the point across to the audience. Compared to the other commercials of this year’s Super Bowl those were the qualities that stuck out more so. The commercial effective with the way it played out and was well set up.…

I’m a generally happy person. It really takes a lot to make me mad. That doesn’t mean, though, that things don’t bug me. Lots of things bug me. It bugs me when I am carded to buy an R rated movie. It bugs me when people are late to appointments they have with me. It bugs me when the officials continually call unfair fouls on one particular team in order to determine the outcome of the game!…but that’s another speech. These are all things that I can anticipate, though. I can calm myself down before they even happen, thus maintaining my sunny outlook. There is one thing I can’t hide from. One annoyance that sneaks up on me when I least expect it. I have a serious issue with particular words and phrases in the English language.…
