English 10, Hour 5
Oct 9, 2014 With the year being 2081, the 211th, 212th, and 213th amendments of the constitution say that everyone must be equal in any way possible. No matter what shall happen to them… Not to mention with everyone being equal there’s always going to be that one person to stand out and that's how the readers meet Harrison. In April 2081, Harrison was taken from his family for being too abnormal to the governments liking. Harrison soon escapes from jail and he tries to overthrow the government but getting shot and killed shows otherwise. During this time, his mother, Hazel was watching her son trying to take control of others and die on television, but then soon forgetting. Through the use of setting, theme, and irony in “Harrison Bergeron” Kurt
Vonnegut Jr. creates a rich literary experience for his readers.
One of the techniques a reader might find important to appreciating “Harrison Bergeron” is theme. Theme means a message about life or human nature the writer shares with the reader. A unique theme would be the danger of equality. If people do not hide what is abnormal about themselves then they will probably get murdered. “She fired twice, and the emperor and the empress were dead before they hit the floor” (26). Harrison gets shot by Diana Moon Glampers for escaping jail and taking off his and others handicaps. Harrisons father, George has to wear weights around his neck to make him weaker and a little ear radio to stop him from thinking. “If
I tried to get away with it, then other people would get away with itand pretty soon we’d be

right back to the dark ages again, with everyone competing against everybody else” (23). If
George were to take off his handicaps it could lead to others taking off theirs as well then they would start competing against each other and the government would not like that. The strong and the weak would be a valid theme. There’s unfairness to those who

In the year 2081, everyone was equal; nobody tried to go against each other; they worked together, and nobody was better than anyone. The reason for not being equal was because of the 211th, 212th, and 213th Amendments to the Constitution. Everything was not all perfect though, April still was cloudy, and nobody liked it because it was gloomy and dark. The H-G men had taken Harrison away from his family. The reason Harrison rebelled was because of his character, his values, and to express himself.…

In order for people to understand or social statuses to change, sacrifices have to be made. “…but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice, and endurance”, Faulkner stated (1950). There is no better example of sacrifice than that of the character Harrison in “Harrison Bergeron”. He knew the risk of taking a stand against the government but he did it anyway despite his near followed death. The sacrifice Harrison made reflects on the scenario that Faulkner relays in his…

While different ages are momentous in the United States, when a person turns twenty-one it seems as if the person is definitely ready to enter the real world. A twenty-one year old step’s into the real world of grownups, accounting, and a legal drinking limit. A twenty first birthday is very special, as is someone’s sixteenth and eighteenth birthday. Both poems by Samuel Johnson and A.E. Housman demonstrate a person turning twenty-one, but both poems demonstrate different views on how the speaker and the audience feel. “To Sir John Lade, on His Coming of Age” is about the speaker telling his audience on how he feels about finally turning twenty-one. “When I Was One-and-Twenty” describes a young adult listening to an elder or someone they look up too about their new age. Both of these poems have a condescending or rude tone while they either talk or listen to the advice that they are given.…

What is universal theme? Universal theme is a message about life that can be portrayed by a majority of cultures across the world. Some exemplars can be revenge, sorrow, and brotherhood. The short story, Harrison Bergeron, was written by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. In the story, we see many uses of different literary devices that help us understand the world they are living in. Similes introduce us to the loud, distracting sounds that go off in George’s head every time he is about to take advantage of his brain. The handicaps that certain people are chosen to wear symbolize their strength, intelligence, and beauty. Vonnegut uses allusions to reference a Greek god and the Constitution. I chose this story because I was fascinated by this world where everyone was “equal” and by Harrison’s fearlessness in challenging the laws and his desire to be free.…
