Write a report which answers the following question: What have you learned about writing effectively for different subject areas in your study of this elective? In your response, refer in detail to the language structures and features of TWO texts you have composed this year in different subjects. Academic English Introduction: As a component in the ESL Higher School Certificate syllabus, year 12 students were required to complete an elective on the topic: Academic English. This elective required students to broaden their knowledge about different types of texts and explore the ways in which these texts could be used in specific situations. In particularly, students focused on types of texts that were widely used in formal learning situations. As a result, students were encouraged to respond to and compose different text types, hence developing and improving their understanding and ability to analyse, synthesise, evaluate and present texts. Goals and Outcomes: In order to successfully complete this elective, students were required to have a thorough understanding of the basic elements to writing effectively, like: analysing questions, locating information and reading for information gathering, note-taking, and reflecting on the process. Henceforth, students were able to develop their skills in drafting extended responses, using appropriate forms and features for different types of texts and distinguishing the differences between essays, reports and journals. Students not only benefitted from learning written texts but were also encouraged to enhance their skills in oral presentations and persuasive speaking. As a result, from the knowledge gained throughout the study of this elective, students were able to improve their evaluating presenting skills.
