Have you ever been to a place where you considered yourself a stranger?
Growing up in a different country for 14 years, I have adapted a whole new lifestyle, where everything seems to be in an instant. As I stepped out of the airport, I was scared & clueless with what Manila had to offer me. The people moving in ceaseless motion, cars honking through every sound on the road and the weather surprising you with the unpredictable conditions – everything seems new to me. During my first days in Manila, I have been isolating myself from everything for the fact that I’m not brave enough to venture out on my own. After those weeks of enrolling myself to the university that I have been given a chance to study upon my course, my parents

It is an awakening, a revival, and the beginning of a wondrous journey. This was my first day in United States, I felt lonesome and desolate, these emotions were just like a monster that destroyed all my positive thoughts. Language and culture differences made me nervous and frustrated, and also hindered me from being able to integrate into the new environment. I was reticent and apathetic when I first entered school and since I don’t talked a lot, only a few classmates wanted to be close to me. I wanted to have more friends, but I didn’t know what to do so I waited for people to come to me. Apparently later, nobody came up and made friend with me. I realized that waiting was not helpful, stepping up and talking to people could eventually benefited me more than any other things. So I started to open myself to people around me and be affable, communicative, and helpful to them. Gradually, my personality became more outgoing and enthusiastic, some people liked to talk to me and some even wanted to share their ideas, opinions to me. My life is becoming interesting and exciting, everyday I get to know various people and enrich myself by learning from them. My experience of language and culture was just as my social life where I afraid to talk and ask. It was unacquainted in the first time when I asked question to a person in the street. But several times of trying and practicing helped me to be more accessible…

I’ve lived in the same neighborhood for as long as I can remember. I’ve gone to school with the same peers. I’ve been blessed enough to not have dealt with much turmoil in my life. I live with my supporting mother who has always been around to drop everything she’s doing to come to my aid. With all this in mind, you could come to the conclusion that I have not had to deal with a lot of change in my life nor have I ever welcomed it. So in my sophomore year when I was invited to participate in a summer program which entailed me leaving home for six weeks, me nor my mother were excited about the opportunity. I did not know that the program, called the Emory Pipeline Collaborative Program, would completely change my outlook on life and my identity…

I am arguing that pirates and explorers are the same. Some reasons that shows they are alike is simply, how society has portrayed them how we think and how movie/book show that pirates are evil and manipulative and explorers are brilliant and heroic. Another reason they are alike is there greed, there has been many times that explorers and their greed has taken over. The last reason is what they’ve done, and how both of them have done horrible things. These are the three reasons why I think that pirates and explorers are alike.…

Everything was different. The student body was very insular; therefore, I had a difficult time making friends. I knew that the private school was not right for me, but I didn’t know how to tell my parents; they had invested a significant amount of money. I knew that I needed to tell them, but I thought I could handle it because I believed it was just a “new school” issue. Since I did not want to hurt their feelings, I was hesitant.…

People say life is all about facing new challenges. In 2008 my life changed for good when I moved to the United States from the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic means so much to me. It’s a part of my life, my identity and my race. For me it was the hardest challenge I had to face in my life. I couldn’t believe how that one flight meant so much for my family and I. I was so young coming with my two sisters and my father, leaving my mother and most of my family members behind. It was never an easy process at 10 years old and not speaking the language made it even harder. But everything comes for good, and here I’m now waiting for my next big challenge “college”.…

“Your father and I have decided you will stay locally, it will be a lot easier for us.”, it was these words that trembled and traumatized my thoughts. In a flashback, I realized I was the same parent-centered child, that was raised to obey and not question the parents’ authority. I remember my parents asking “What do you want to be when you grow up?” In response, ” I had no clue.” They constantly encouraged me to go to college throughout my high school career. If for some reason I had to stay for my AP class, they would motivate me. High school was the time in my life, where I had to apply to higher education institutions, and when my torment began.…
