I sit down on the blue cloth seats of the cramped rickety plane that will transport us back to the United States. On the flight out of Andros, no more than three, shabby and battered roads passed beneath us. I reflect on the week I have spent at Forfar Field Station, and I reminisce about the blazing sun, gentle ocean breeze, and the sound of the waves. The purpose of the trip was to study marine biology in a practical and hands-on method. In the end, Andros Island opened my eyes to a new process of learning. Throughout the week, I interacted with many aspects of island life and ecology. We were exposed to the harsh reality of the island. The inhabitants were impoverished. Many learning techniques are nails being pounded into our brains in school daily: classroom-based learning, overemphasized homework, and mundane lectures. These tedious methods are outdated and simply do not effectively teach students. Being the son of an experienced educator, I am slightly pressured into believing these ideas are the correct way to learn. I learned many facts and observations without having to sit at a desk, without having homework, and without having to listen to a boring lecture. I learned that it can be beneficial to learn in a hands-on and practical fashion rather than a typical style of learning used in schools. I would have gone home from school that day the same person I was when I arrived. Without practical experience, information is useless in affecting me.
