Movies Review
Erin Brockovich is a real – life story of a twice divorced mother of 3 who despite her lack of legal experience took on a $28 billion company and successfully secured the largest settlement ever paid in a direct action lawsuit in US history. Nominated for an Acadamy Award for Best Picture, All the President’s Men is a detective story of two reporters from the popular US newspaper, Washington Post. They helped to remove President Richard Nixon from office in 1972. The movie is based on a book by the said reporters whose names are Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein. All the President's Men is said to be “a genuine modern classic and one of the finest and most significant films American cinema has ever produced”. Even though these movies are of different genres, their underlying stories bring to light certain journalistic principles. Persistence – In Erin Brockovich , Erin (played by Julia Roberts) acquires a job in a law firm as a filing clerk. She stumbles upon a real estate file containing medical records. Curious to find out what was going on she convinces the lawyer with whom she works to allow her to further investigate what the medical records were about. In All the President’s Men, reporters Bob Woodward (Robert Redford) and Carl Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman) are assigned to cover a routine burglary at the National Democratic Committee headquarters at the Watergate offices d and are determined to find out what is responsible for burglars breaking into the Watergate Hotel. Two of the burglars have the phone number of Howard Hunt, a White House aide and CIA consultant. Woodward and Bernstein start digging and with the support of interviews with other aides and cabinet members they are able to uncover contradictory stories. They persevere in getting to the bottom of the contradictory stories regardless of the risks involved. Another principle is the importance of pursuing the truth.

She convinces Ed to allow her to investigate the connection of the medical records and she treks out to the desert town of Hinkley. There she meets Donna Jensen, a woman whose entire family has been stricken with serious medical problems. As Erin digs deeper into the medical histories of Donna and other residents of the town, she inadvertently discovers a corporate cover-up involving deaths linked to chromium-contaminated drinking water in the small town. In an effort to find the truth Erin begins a campaign to make Pacific Gas & Electric accountable for the illness and death that they have caused. Likewise in All the President’s Men, Bob and Carl pursue the truth by continuing with their investigation despite being threatened. As they encounter each conflicting story which involved even persons from the White House they publish it in an effort to inform the public about all the wrongdoings. Amidst all this the White House continues to deny involvement, thus it was there responsibility as good journalists to dig for the truth. In Erin’s determination to find out the reason for the residents becoming ill and driven by her own persistence and desire to seek justice for the town’s residents, Erin goes door to door to sign up plaintiffs for a direct-action lawsuit against PG&E. However, not everyone shares Erin's enthusiasm to see justice done, PG&E is the largest employer in the area, she finds a number of persons not wanting to come forward. She also experiences some resentment on the part of her co-workers. Herein lies her resolve to seek the truth. With these movies being released years apart from each other, there is no difference in the journalistic approaches used in bringing the underlying issues to light. The same principles which obtained then still obtain now. However because of the demographics of our society for instance, journalists are unable to fulfill these principles.
