IntroductionResponsible leadership is a relational and ethical phenomenon, which occurs in social process of interaction with those who affect or are affected by leadership and have a stake in the purpose and vision of the leadership relationship ( Maak.T & Pless.N.M, 2006). A socially responsible leader is not only concerned about what theydo, how they do it but also leaders who have the opportunity grow. Moreover, this leadership position are taken on requires strength-strength of will, strength of convictions and, most importantly, strength of character such as humainity, responsive culturally sensitive, ethical and respectful. A socially responsible leadership is the one who have operate ethically and also have responsibility to other people he/she is leading. For example , they care about the needs and wants of the community members, holding an organization or people accountable for irresponsible and unethical behaviors toward others (Socially Responsible Leadership)Key facts of movieWith a starring Julia Roberts, Albert Finny, Aaron Eckhart and Peter Coyote, Erin Brockovich was released in 2000 by directed Steven Soderbergh. It is the story of a single mother, who fights against the injustice meted out to the common people.Erin Brockovich (Julia Roberts) has three young children and twice-divorced. She has only basic education and she cannot find a job to support her family. Unfortunately, her lawyer- Ed Masry ( Albert Finney) fails to get her compensation in a lawsuit against the guy who hit her in car accident. With no job, no financial support and debt, she turns up at the door of her attorney to hire her in his law firm. One day, while working in the office, she stumbles upon a file related to real estate deals and prevalence of an unknown sickness in Hinkley, a small town in California. This real estate case is about a company named Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), it was tring to cover-up the case by planning to build a freeway ramp. Erin was intrigue with the case and took it upon herself to visit the town, which she interviewed people who live there and she discovered that most of people in this area have medical problems. Erin investigated some water analysis report about PG&E, and what she uncovered s a water contamination cover-up. The water consumed by the town people caused them to sick sick and all the illness were caused by Hexavalent poising. The unethical behavior of PG&E resulted in more than 600 people in Hinkley getting ill.Supporting Erin through the process, more on the emotional side is George (Aaron Eckhart), her neighbor. A Harley Davidson biker, he help Erin takes care of her children , cares for her and finally, wins her love. With the help of a major law firm, Erin and Ed fought and determine to fight for people in the case till the end, they wona compensation of $333 million, the largest settlement lawsuit in U.S.( Erin Brockovich, 2002). Responsible LeadershipThe theory I taken to analysis the movie Erin Brockovich is “ responsible leadership in a stakeholder society – a relational perspective” and this journal discuss about responsible leadership concept in the context of stakeholder theory with a leader who takes place in interaction with a multitude of followers as stakeholder inside and outside the corporation. The concept here also affects or should affect the mindset, roles and responsibility of leaders. The leader become a coordinator and a cultivator of relationship towards different groups of stakeholder such as employee, clients & customers, business partners, shareholder and social and environment. Moreover, it also introduced the roles model of responsible leadership and this model gives a gestalt to a responsible leader and describes the different roles a leader takes in leading stakeholders and business in society.
