Eric Zeng: The Man Who Changed My Life
I may not be the most brilliant man you’ve ever seen. Although that might be a bit under-optimistic, it doesn’t mean I, Eric Zeng, can’t have extraordinary or thrilling memories of my apparently short past of ten years (FYI that does not mean I’m dead). I’ve traveled to many places in my life, met many friends, and had some activities that some have never done in their lifetime. I have one sibling currently at the age of five years old, though I might not talk about him occasionally. I’ve been to Disney, and China. The school I go to is currently Navy elementary, Fairfax County, which I moved to three to four years ago. I am proud of my life so far, and will happily continue it.

I’ve been to China when I was just three years old, in 2009. It was a first experience for many, many things and activities. It was the first time I went fishing, two years later I was obsessed with fishing, I went to eat things that are almost only from that area, and I also learned how to ride a bike there. It’s a place of fun and memory for me. Even though it has a lot of cons,(cleanliness, air conditioning, smell, …) it also has a lot of pros too though (lots of activities, pet turtles, better food, there’s a park in my area, and family time). I really, really like traveling to China, that’s basically what I want to say. We go

Like I said in the beginning, I don’t like to talk about him too much. Even though he’s my brother, he’s still super annoying and spoiled. He also needs better education, because he’s one of the people who likes to run around rather than study or read a book. I sort of hate him, because he ruins everything. His name is Kyle and he is also really nosy. He always intrudes on private conversations to find out what you’re doing. Even though he’s five, he uses words and assumes a meaning for them. He tells lies a lot. I’m guessing you don’t want to be friends with a kid like

Then I went to J.F.K. middle school for two years. And then I went to Enrico Fermi high school. I will always remember my high school years fondly. I had a lot of fun and I worked really hard in terms of work and studying. It feels like yesterday that I graduated high school. In reality, it’s been 2.5 months since I graduated. I was apart of Fermis last graduating class before the high schools were consolidated. This made me feel a sense of ownership and pride. I was apart of my school's history of the final class to graduate from it. I feel like I will forever be apart of my school and my school will forever be apart of me. I asked my dad how he remembers the day that I graduated. And he said that I said, “I can’t believe this day finally came.” (Sternal, Joseph.)I still feel like I should be walking into that school again. I can’t believe I’m walking into a school that isn’t Fermi even today. I’m very happy that I got to be apart of the last graduating class because it made my high school experience that much more memorable and…

She describes that once she enters China, she feels different. One of the reasons she feels that way is because some things she experiences in China is different from what she expected. For example, when they got off the train and she meets her great-aunt for the first time and notices that her relatives from China treat her as if they've known her their whole lives, even though they probably only have seen her in pictures. She also didn't expect China to have tall buildings, a multitude of cars, and she never expected "communist China" to have a magnificent hotel as described in the…

The girl in China is (and likely always will be) living in a way oddly reminiscent of Ancient China. Although the nation as a whole has evolved remarkably throughout the past 4000 years, many centuries old customs and traditions have withstood the test of time and are still visible in modern China. Contrastingly, the old traditions and standards of the United States show little resemblance to what the country has become. Many of the ideals that founded this country just a few hundred years ago have since disintegrated. The underlying point is this: China is a country whose current customs and beliefs are deeply rooted in its ancient history, while the United States has customs and…

We drove down in separate cars from Kentucky enduring about thirteen long hours of “fun” with my immediate family. We finally arrive in animal kingdom where we are staying in one of the Disney hotels. We get to our room and get settled in when I look out on the balcony and see giraffes, and antelopes, and peacocks walking around in my back yard. It was one of my favorite parts of this trip. We then go out to wait for the bus to take us to our first kingdom, epcot. I remember immediately being here as a child and know exactly what I want to go and do and see. Now being seventeen, I take one of my cousins and we go off on our own to see what we want to experience. We go to the science museum and learn about space and evolution which has through my high school years been very beneficial to me. Having fun and learning at the same time was great. I spend the entire next day going around to all the rides and enjoying them at least two times each. I couldn’t believe how much fun I was having. After that I went to the stores and got all the things I wanted to take back home to remember this trip…

Another thing about the people here, the students especially. They’re so American. I don’t even bother telling them the name of our town , they’ll just pretend they understand when I say it’s far outside of Shanghai. Their sense of independence here is shockingly selfish too, many of them left home simply because they wanted to. I heard one woman complaining about how she’s forced to support her aging parents. Could you imagine being so selfish? All I’m doing here is studying to someday support Mom and Dad, even if I’m only able to do so financially from afar…

Jing-Mei’s trip to China is initially to fulfill her mother’s wishes of going home, but it is essentially a personal attempt to connect with her Chinese heritage. Her initial thought of China was that it was going to be a poor and corrupted country — assumptions she collected from her mother’s stories. However, China was not what she had anticipated. “We are caught in a stream of people rushing, and shoving, pushing us along, until we find ourselves in one of a dozen lines waiting to go through customs. I feel as if I were getting on a number 30 Stockton bus in San Francisco. I am in China, I remind myself. And somehow the crowds don’t bother me.” (183). Tan gives the reader a glimpse of Chinese culture and society, which is far different from the American stereotypes of China. The similarities between modern China and the city of San Francisco gave Jing-Mei a feeling of home and comfort. “The minute our train leaves the Hong Kong border and enters Shenzen, China, I feel different. I can feel the skin on my forehead tingling, my blood rushing through a new course, my bones aching with a familiar old pain. And I think, My mother was right. I am becoming Chinese.” (179) For the first time in her life, she felt a sense of connection to her family and heritage. At this moment, Jing-Mei begins the process of self-discovery as an Asian-American…

The most essential part of making that long dreamt of journey to a foreign land is research. I know, I know ~ you've planned that trip to Paris since seeing your first wartime movie or Broadway play. But, there is more to your trip than which sights to see. And, as someone who's traveled a great deal, I would like to share with you some of the things I've learned over the years. Let's begin with the language barrier. With the exception of English speaking countries, it's never wise to rely on there being English speaking people where you travel. It's widely known that many countries teach their children English in their early years. But, if your dream is to visit the more remote areas in China in order to learn meditation and other ancient…

As a cultural experience, I took a trip to Chinatown. Both my sister and I were adopted from China, and because of that, I have not grown up in an environment where I am surrounded by Chinese culture. Despite my parents’ best efforts to provide an awareness of our heritage (which I strongly appreciate), I still feel a large disconnect with my racial identity. I enjoyed going to all the little shops, eating Chinese food, and practicing my Chinese by reading any label, sign, or store name I saw. I loved going to Chinatown because even though it’s not actually China, I feel like it’s the closest I can get for the time being.…
