Equality In The Odyssey
In chapter 11, Equality begins to refer to himself as “I” rather than “we”. He never explains why he began call himself this until chapter 12, rather this whole chapter is full of descriptive words, or what could be called a form of poetry. He states that he discovered “I” whilst reading the books in the house him and Liberty come across. “It was when I read the first of the books I found in my house that I saw the word ‘I’. And when I understood this word, the book fell from my hands, and I wept, I who had never known tears. I wept in deliverance and in pity for all mankind.” (98). Equality has now become an individual, only dependent on himself and cares only for those he chooses to care for. In chapter 12, Equality gives himself the name Prometheus. …show more content…
This can accurately portray Equality since he rebelled against his society and the House of Scholars. Equality/Prometheus had then given Liberty the name Gaea, which I’m familiar with it meaning something along the lines of “great earth”. When I researched her it had told me that Gaea, the Greek Goddess, had birthed the first Titans or Gods, and the first humans. Knowing now that Liberty/Gaea is pregnant with Equality/Prometheus’s child, this is beginning to lead to a new race where everyone is their own

Equality 7-2521 was the odd ball out of his brothers. At least we know it, but he kept his desire for knowledge a secret, until he got caught in the tunnel. I feel that this quote “Know what you want in life and go after it. I worship individuals for their highest possibilities as individuals, and I loathe humanity, for its failure to live up to these possibilities”, perfectly depicts the main purpose and Equality 7-2521. It represents how he is unique. He does not have the same beliefs as his fellow brothers or anyone in the society in which he thrives in. It is very interesting that he is being criticized because of his knowledge, almost like a parallel universe.…

    Bias In The Odyssey

When stories are told, no matter who the narrator is, their testimonies always differ from the truth. We see this in eyewitness accounts of crimes where witnesses overwhelmingly fail to accurately recount events. We also see this in stories, specifically, ones told in the first person where the narrator tells a story from their point of view and inject their own personal biases in the process often leaving the audience pondering what the truth is. Margaret Atwood addresses the issues of different perspectives telling different stories that are brought up by Homer’s Odyssey in The Penelopiad. The book illustrates just how different the same story can be told from different perspectives and the issues it may cause. The polarizing, bias and flawed…

Equality 7-2521 strongly resembles the Greek mythological creature, Prometheus, in many ways. They both are very different from their people. Prometheus was a titan who was nothing like the other titans. He fought to defeat his brothers so that the gods could rule. Likewise, Equality is obviously nothing like the people of his society as he was told earlier in the book. “‘There is evil -in your bones, Equality 7-2521, for your body has grown beyond the bodies of your brothers.’”* Prometheus is especially known for introducing fire to mankind, just as Equality planned to revolutionize the world with his light bulb. But when he introduced it to the Council, they denied it. In fact they were scared of his light. Another obvious similar characteristic the two share is their will to sacrifice anything for their beliefs. Prometheus knew he would be punished for stealing the fire from Zeus, but still refused to keep it away from mankind. “…and he suffered for his deed.”* For his punishment, Zeus chained him to a rock and sent a bird to eat his liver. Every day his liver would grow back, so every day the bird returned for his meal. This punishment was meant for eternity. Equality also knew over his long term research that he would be punished severely if anyone found him, but still did not stop in his…

Liberty tells Equality that he has always shown intense passion for what he does in life, and always has hope. She also tells Equality that he has pride in what he does and isn’t afraid to speak up for himself. She then contrasts Equality with the rest of the men in their society, saying that they have absolutely nothing fueling their actions and nothing that keeps them going in life. Liberty says they are weak, and calls them out for being too fearful to speak up for they believe in.…

Contrary to all of the rules and controls that the government holds over members of the society, Equality 7-2521 longs for a world of self government and more than likely will refrain from the ways of his past. He writes, “For the coming of that day shall I fight, I and my sons and my chosen friends. For the freedom of Man. For his rights. For his life. For his honor.” Equality 7-2521 hopes to break the chains that enslave them to the corrupt world of collectivism. “To be free, a man must be free from his brother. That is…

There is a fine line drawn between superiority and suppressiveness. Although, together the adjectives are terrifying, these words describe a man who for decades hid his misconduct towards women. This is just one of many stories that has publicly unfolded and revealed the hideous truth behind a man with power in the film industry. Since the article written by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey, published in The New York Times, actresses and models have come forward; sharing their own horrific encounters with Harvey Weinstein. Their experiences have highlighted the importance of confronting men who take advantage of their power and manipulate people to keep them quiet. Along the way, he helps his love Liberty, become an individual too. Without his invention, he would have never thought he could make a change and be different, but in the end he did. He thought it was a sin to write at the beginning of the novel, but as he progresses past communism he focuses on his own independent values. He set an example for all people and let them know that it is okay to be good at something; it is okay to stand out. Equality’s moral assessments change from the beginning to end because he realizes who he genuinely is as a person, and not what others want him to be. It is not a sin for Equality to write, it is a…

One of the most important sacrifices made was when Equality left the society he lived in and traveled into the forest, up into the mountains. In the mountains Equality found an abandoned house, and inside there was a book and while reading the book he realised he is an individual not a whole like the society he was living in thought ( Anthem Pg 78-105). When Equality left society he sacrificed everything he had, but he did this because he knew he was different and was tired of living by the strict rules that must be followed. If equality did not take the sacrifice of going into the forest, he would have been executed and he would have never figured out that he is not a whole as society portrays everyone to be. Another important sacrifice Equality made was when he decided to show the World Council of Scholars his his glass box, that lights up (Anthem Pg-70-71). When Equality decided to do this he risked his life and his invention, but if he did not do this he would be left wondering if he could change the way people think and he would have never known what the Council of Scholars would think. When Equality sacrificed everything he was scared but he knew it had to be done for the better good, even though he could have been executed for his…
