Epilogue To The Giver
Jonas immersed himself in the memory. Suddenly, he was sitting down next to a small window. He looked out and upon seeing the clouds he realized he was flying. Below, he could see a long strip of tree tops, skyscrapers, bridges and tiny moving dots. He noticed that all the people around him were sitting orderly, in rows. There was blue carpeting on the floor and white paneling on the ceiling. He was in what seemed like a long and narrow tunnel. “I must be in a plane, Jonas thought.” He had never been inside a plane before, but he had seen some flying over the community. Suddenly, a large thump resonated followed by multiple noises and explosions. People were startled and confused, murmuring to each other.

After a ding- dong sound, a voice

The plane hit the river. Quickly, large gushes started to fill the plane. The frigid water made Jonas’s feet numb. The stewardesses calmly announced, “We will evacuate the plane.” The doors opened and large inflatable slides popped up from every exit door. People were rushing to get out. Jonas noticed a lady crawling over the seats with a wrapped-up baby in her arms. Older people struggled with the incoming current. People were trembling and their faces looked pale from the shock and the freezing temperature of the water. The pilot paced the aircraft back and forth making sure all the passengers had been evacuated. Sirens could be heard from the city, and helicopters hovered above. One by one, the passengers went down the slides without hesitation. Nobody was hurt, but everybody was wet and shaking. A large ferry shuttled everyone to safety.

Jonas snapped out of the memory and found the Giver staring at him with curious eyes. “How was your experience?” The Giver asked. “I felt I had no control,” Jonas said quickly. “I was anxious and scared and couldn’t move.” “What did you learn?” The Giver asked curiously.
“I learned that there are some situations in life in which you can’t control what is happening, you can only control yourself and try to stay calm and

A fulfilled life means that you are ready to die because you are satisfied with your accomplishments and your life. However the question is; can you live a fulfilled life in a supposed utopia, if you are restricted and not given the freedom of decision. In the world of The Giver there is perfect balance, but no choices and sameness is strongly enforced. In Harrison Bergeron everyone is equal but those who are beyond others are restrained. In All Summer in a Day everyone lives on an alien planet in space, but are kept isolated underground except for a few hours every seven years. “Things could change, Gabe,” Jonas went on. “Things could be different. I don’t know how, but there must be some way for things to be different. There could be colors.” (128). A Plane Crash

It was a smooth night flight and for a change even turbulence seemed to be having a day off. But about twenty minutes later, the plane sharply jolted back and forth. It was sharp enough to grab everybody’s attention. A cold shiver ran down my spine and I quietly scolded myself for visualizing all those movies about plane crashes in just a fraction of a second. I hadn’t even calmed my nerves down when suddenly extreme turbulence started occurring, making the plane lurch sideways and bags started falling from the upper luggage compartments. I could hear faint cries accompanied by nervous laughter around when the pilot made an announcement that the plane had merely gotten stuck in an air pocket and there was nothing to worry about. But just to add up to our nervousness, the cabin lights started flickering and in a minute, we were surrounded by utter darkness. The roaring of the engines, the whispering of people everything went as silent as a grave and all I could hear was the spooky whoosh of the wings against the wind.…

Our sadness quickly dissipated when it finally hit us that we were taking the trip of our lifetime. We began to imagine what it would be like, what we would eat, see and where we would be spending our evenings. When our flight number was called to begin boarding, I had butterflies in my stomach. I clutched my small carry-on harder and harder as I walked deeper into the corridor that would lead to our airplane. I was nothing but smiles as I looked wide-eyed at my surroundings. It took but a few minutes to get everyone settled in, but to me it seemed like an eternity. The captain and the flight attendants did their routine demonstrations as…

I was utterly oblivious to the crowd that was with me, running through every details of the airplane’s design. The metal around the entry door was a little rusted and worn, which gave me an eerie feeling. As I stepped aboard the enormous and majestic plane, my face turned wan and beads of perspiration started forming on my head as the fear of heights dawned on me. Out of the blue, a mild and gentle voice jolted me back to reality. An air stewardess greeted me with a warm and welcoming smile plastered on her lovely mug. Her neat uniform matched absolutely perfect to her precise countenance. She had amiable features and a brunette hair styled in big curls.…

My internal organs thumped against my chest as I dragged my bag along the carpet floor and into the aisle. As I walked into the long hall I glanced up and noticed the sign telling me I could get on. My entire body could barely hold itself together with the hope of great dreams-come-true event about to take place I said to myself “I’ll soon be in the air.” I slowed my pace to further enjoy what was happening. Swarms of people walked around me as I treasured knowing that one of my lifetime goals was now surely going to occur. The excitement and adrenaline running through my veins could have killed a horse. Not being able to stand such self-torture. I hurried to my pace to what was almost a jog, until I had caught up with the unfortunately boring group that I was, as I felt universally bound to. I came to a bend in the tunnel where I saw through the glass window, that which before entering gave no hint of existence. “I’ll soon be in the air.”…
