The Epic of Gilgamesh was the foundation of Western literature and the first written story. It was written in the form cuneiform. Cuneiform was the first written language and it was written on clay. Gilgamesh was the king of Uruk in Babylonia on the river of Euphrates. Uruk was a city-state on the east of the Euphrates. As a king, Gilgamesh built many ziggurats; Ziggurats are temple towers. This was where the priests would site astronomical observations. The Epic of Gilgamesh took place in the Fertile Crescent. The people of Sumeria were polytheistic which means they believed in more than two Gods. Ishtar was a goddess of love, war, and fertility. Ishtar the goddess falls in love with Gilgamesh. The Tigris River was on the eastern side of Mesopotamia while the Euphrates was on the west. Mesopotamia literally means, “A country between two rivers.” The Sumerians were the first civilization in Mesopotamia. The Epic of Gilgamesh is important even today because it developed the western literature. It was the first written story. The epic of Gilgamesh later on helped many other writers’ write their stories. A huge example is Homer, who wrote the Odyssey and the Iliad. These stories later on inspired modern day authors today who still write about a hero who’s on a mission. A modern day novel that was really influenced by the Epic of Gilgamesh is: The alchemist written by Paulo Coelho. The character was a young shepherd named Santiago who was set on a mission to Egypt to find treasure. It is because of the cuneiform, that we now have our alphabet and we are able to write our own stories. Since the Sumerians developed the wheel, we now have a more developed and progressed way of transportation. Since the priests would observe the stars and make astronomical observations, we now have zodiac signs. The movies that are made now are very highly influenced the Epic of Gilgamesh.
