Environmental Racism In The Food System
Why environmental racism has a strong presence in the food system. In today's system, farm workers face difficult and hazardous conditions, low-income neighborhood lack supermarkets but abound in fast-food restaurants and liquor stores, food products emphasize convenience rather than wholesomeness, and the international reach of American fast food franchises has been a major contributor to an epidemic of globesity.

Environmental racism has a strong presence in the food system. The residents living in low-income urban neighborhoods are the ones who are mainly affected by the injustice. Typically the people who reside in said areas are minority groups mainly African Americans and hispanics. There are growing evidence that race and class is definitely

    Just think of upper class and lower class foods. When thinking of upper class foods you may think of lobster, caviar, steak, organic pesticide free fruits and vegetables, grass fed meats, the freshest seafood, wheat and grain breads, fine wines, and other traditionally opulent and expensive food items; the best of the best is theirs for the taking, or, rather eating. Lower class foods often thought to involve junk foods, fast foods, white breads, and industrially farmed fruits, vegetables, and meats; foods that are cheap and available are theirs to feast on. These food items are used to signify social class and create boundaries. It's out of the ordinary and almost seems like rule breaking to see lower income people eating organic vegetables and a fresh grass fed steak or lobster dinners, as it's also out of the ordinary to see wealthy upper class people eating Pop-Tarts, Doritos, or going for a food run at McDonalds. These foods are used to unify the social classes, but also serves as a divisions to keep the social classes in their place. Lower class foods are notably low in nutrients and are generally unhealthy. These unhealthy foods lead to a large amount of children going hungry or malnourished due to poverty and lack of access to healthy foods (Fitchen "Hunger, Malnutrition, and Poverty in the Contemporary United States"), and the urban foodscapes in black and Latino communities are riddled with processed and unhealthy…

    In the book, Fast Food Nation, Eric Schlosser discusses the problems that the nation is facing with fast food restaurants. Schlosser wrote this book because he was concerned with where the fast food industry was taking America. He voices his concern about the children and their health regarding meat bacteria, and the fat content of the food. He also mentions how potato farmers, cattle ranchers, and chicken raisers are suffering from the industry controlling prices too low. Another worry Schlosser has is how the meat packing factories for these restaurants treat their workers and ultimately how careful they are with the meat. There are many horrifying stories about the harsh injuries and severe chronic problems these immigrant workers experience everyday or suffer with for the rest of their lives from working under such dangerous conditions. Schlosser also informs his readers of how the meat is processed, from the killing of the cattle to the boxing of the meat and some of the unknown, surprising facts that are involved in the whole process. Another issue presented in this book is how cities are affected by the rapid growth of these fast food restaurants. Also, Schlosser interviews teenagers working at these restaurants and tells their stories of frequent robberies, occasional shootings and poor work conditions. Ultimately this book is geared to help the people of America realize that there is a serious problem with fast food restaurants and we need to start demanding better food.
