Environmental Ethics- Notes
Wed., Nov. 21
LEOPOLD’S LAND ETHIC
- ecological dependence: everything has a land period - top to bottom: pure carnivore, insectivores, insects, plants, soil - reps the trophic lvl; energy flow increases as you go higher up through the ecological system in the pyramid - we are part of an ecological system (complex system) - history of morality: expanding moral consideration = expanding the individuals who count (i.e., wife, children, etc.), the fence of community and duty; builds up until accounts for all beings (i.e., tribe/fam -> nation -> humanity -> land) - problem: doesn’t count individuals (i.e., animals) - humans are “plain citizens”, not conquerors
- according to Leopold, community is interdependence (we affect the land, which changes us), structured (Passmore believes in discourse; we have reason), discourse / self-determination (can you have genuine community w/ the land?)
- the Land Ethic: a thing is right as it tends to preserve the stability, integrity, and beauty of the biotic community and it’s wrong if it tends otherwise - the ethic we should adopt being part of land community; the reason why someone might adopt the ethic (self-enlightenment – do it b/c it’s better for you; utilitarian justification; instrumental value)
- eco-fascism?
Fri., Nov. 23
DEEP ECOLOGY (contrast to shadow ecology) (wholeist)
- taking ecology and understanding our role on earth
- self-in-self: achieved thru self-reflection (identification, empathy; more than skin deep; deeper sense of self underneath conception) - how one is raised: ego – family – community – humanity – ecological self; differs based on these factors
ECOLOGICAL ONTOLOGY
- no natural boundaries (i.e., we will die and everything just blends together in the end)
- organic whole – interdependent relations
ETHICS OF DUTY INADEQUATE
- act out of love instead of doing a beautiful act; it will not feel like a sacrifice b/c it is the right thing to do 1) self

After reading “The Land Ethic” by Aldo Leopold I found that his research and understanding of land ethics is very thorough and he makes valid points that should be read by everyone in our society. He gives a different outlook on land that makes sense and creates a vivid image of the way that we as human should view land. He describes land as not just soil that lies beneath our feet or below the plants that we walk on, cut, or eat, but as the first layer in a community of which each piece is dependent on one another. If one piece of the community were to fall or not do what it is intended, it would in turn make it difficult for the rest of the community the thrive as it should. When thinking of land it makes it easier if it is thought of as…

A ‘land ethic’ is a philosophy that guides and regulates the actions humans take when they attempt to change or use the land. I feel that people over use and over-work the land and resources that we have in the world. Sure, I like to have fancy things but when I think about the fact that everyone in the world likes to have these things they don’t need at all it makes me sick. We are killing our planet every day. I don’t like saying ‘we’ need to come up with a cheaper and cleaner form of energy because I feel hypocritical, but that is definitely something that has got to happen. It is imperative that we meet the needs of society today in such a way that we are still able to meet the needs of future generations.…

Aldo Leopold was a conservationist, forester philosopher, educator, writer and outdoor enthusiast and was among the founding fathers of the North American conservation movement during the first half of twentieth century (Leopold, 1981). He argues that humans are part of a community that includes the land, from the soil to the rivers and seas (Leopold, 1981). According to Leopold (1981), until humans recognize that they are part of the land and act accordingly, they will continue to negatively impact the environment and their own health by extension (Leopold, 1981)…

The levels of organization of a community is simple. It starts with the primary producer, then the primary consumer, secondary consumer, tertiary consumer, and lastly the decomposer. Some examples of producers are algae, sea weed, and any other type of potosynthetic organism. A pyramid of production is a pyramid that shows the loss of energy with each transfer in a food chain. At the bottom of the pyramid are the large amount of autotrophs with the most energy. The next (but smaller) level is the group of primary consumers (insects and other herbivores) who only get ten percent of the autotroph’s energy. Next are the small group of secondary consumers, who only get ten percent of the primary consumer’s energy. The top level consists of the smallest group, the tertiary consumers who only receive ten percent of the secondary consumer’s…

The Los Angeles Basin is a plain that lies between the Pacific Ocean and mountains to the north and east. During the summer, the sunny climate produces a layer of warm, dry air at upper elevations. Southern California counties are where almost 15 million people reside. South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) is a governmental organization established in 1977 to deal with the historically poor air quality in the area surrounding Los Angeles. Air pollution injures organisms, reduces visibility, and attacks and corrodes materials such as metals, plastics, rubber, and fabrics. The respiratory tracts of animals, including humans, are particularly harmed by air pollutants, which worsen existing medical conditions such as chronic lung disease, pneumonia, and cardiovascular problems. Discussed in our paper will be several key points that will highlight very important details in regards to the efforts to reduce ozone in Southern California. Topics to be discussed are; described the historical development of the issue, the stakeholder’s involvement in the issue, and the long term effects of the problem, the responsibilities that arise from the ethical position and try to find a solution to this major problem.…

This is the United States of America, land of the free. Good health care is a right, not a privilege. Healthcare (including public health) is special because it protects normal functioning, which in turn protects the range of opportunities open to individuals (Daniels N. 2001 pg.2). Currently President Obama has been trying to change the way health care is approached in the United States. He is facing quite a bit of opposition in his ideas that the government should provide health care for all Americans. No matter what your stance is on President Obama 's healthcare plan, we all realize that it is better to have health insurance than not. With prescription-drug costs being so out of control, many people have to choose between food and their prescriptions. Which is just not right, the fact is that health care is out of control.…
