1 Introduction
When thinking of an Entrepreneur the words that usually come to mind are: innovative, flexible, dynamic, risk-friendly, creative and oriented to work. At least that is how a good entrepreneur should be. Those adjectives are used to describe the ideal entrepreneur. When someone thinks of an entrepreneur, it would be someone that has an idea, establishes an enterprise and hires people, with the main function to introduce a new product or service to the market. Sometimes that sounds almost romantic, but actually being an entrepreneur is more complicated in practical experience. Especially in a country that according to the World Economic Forum (WEF) carries the denomination of a factor-driven country, surrounded by efficiency-driven economies and where the words innovative and competitiveness are a privilege of only a few. Education, the context where entrepreneurs develop the ventures and financial support, among other factors influences the entrepreneurial activity. This essay tries to highlight the main aspects surveyed by the Global Entrepreneur Monitor (GEM) in Bolivia, like venture profile, entrepreneur profile and tries to show what the entrepreneurial reality in this country is like. There is also an explanation on what experts think about main factors that could foster or hinder the entrepreneurial activities. A brief description is presented regarding the type of activities carried out by new businesses referred to in the report as early-stage businesses and established businesses, reflecting the type of ventures carried out by entrepreneurs. This document is structured into three parts: the first part briefly explains the GEM Report, how it is structured and introduces some concepts that are going to be used to describe the situation in Bolivia. The second part describes the results obtained in the survey in 2010 focusing mainly in the aspirations of the entrepreneurs, the kind of venture Bolivians have, the features and education level of the average Bolivian entrepreneur.
