Enhancing Critical Reflection Of Students During A Clinical Internship: Article Analysis

For this assignment the article selected is titled “ Enhancing Critical Reflection of Students During a Clinical Internship Using the Self-S.O.A.P. Note”. In summary, this article's purpose is to describe how journaling techniques can be used for reflection of a physical therapy clinical internship. This article just happens to focus on physiology students. During a six week clinical internship 15 physiology students were told to write reflections of their clinical hours using the Self-S.O.A.P note method. The S.O.A.P method is a acronym for the students. The students were given this guide to follow: “the “S” stands for subjective information which students collected that day/week; “O” stands for a summary of interventions and skills the students performed; “A” stands for self-assessment of their own performance; “P” stands for the plan for improvement, changes, and new challenges the students had” ( Dye 3). This was carried out because many believe that physical therapists or anyone else in the medical field doing professional work needs to develop writing skills in order to be successful. By using this reflection method the students could critically reflect on what they did and what they learned earlier on allowing the students to see the full extent of what had been accomplished.
