The Man, The Myth, The Enigma: Sixers GM Sam Hinkie

Before recounting the history of Sam Hinkie, I must first admit that I am an avid Philadelphia 76ers fan, and I am going to be naturally biased. However, as Patricia Nelson Limerick noted in her historical piece of writing, there will always be a writer and a reader. Depending on who the writer and reader is (and other factors such as the past, the environment, etc.) will drastically alter the emotional effect. Along with my personal experience and a few first person accounts of Sam Hinkie, I will attempt to provide a brief – albeit personalized – history of the man who has the money and power to control a professional sports organization with a “push of a button.” Unlike Patricia Nelson Limerick, I am attempting to debrief my reader to my personal biases (and that of my first person sources). Everything I utilize from statistics to factual occurrences will be entirely truthful and nonetheless provide an entirely personal account and history of Sam Hinkie. It will not only show him as the man who makes front office decisions, but the path he traveled down to arrive at his current position and what makes him different than the normal general manager in the NBA. His decisions and the ultimate results could change the business of sports entirely and that is what makes his decision-making process so interesting. Sam Hinkie was born in the Netherlands and his family later relocated to the United States of America when he was a young child. As a student, Hinkie earned his MBA from Stanford University after playing sports all throughout high school. While earning his MBA, he advised a couple NFL teams on draft strategies and statistical analysis at a young age. He also was working part-time with the Houston Rockets of the NBA as well which is where he would reside for quite a while. Hinkie was credited for many of the successes that

They are as follows: Allan Houston, Stephon Marbury, Penny Hardaway, Gilbert Arenas, Allen Iverson, Tracy McGrady, Steve Francis, and Jermaine Oneal. These are the guys who believe it or not set their teams back 7-10 years with injuries, poor play and franchise crippling contracts. They are the pioneers of the 1999 CBA. The Knicks shelled out a total of $327 million to Marbury, Houston, and Hardaway who played a combined 94 games while collecting every cent. The Rockets wont recover from Francis' and McGrady's contracts anytime soon as will The Pacers with Jermaine Oneal and the Sixers with Allen Iverson. Now Iverson is a mild exception. He actually earned his money, but in the process set a terrible precedent for the Lebron generation: If you're an All-Star, you deserve $100 million. It was a reason Philly traded him to Denver. Last but not least Gilbert Arenas. This guy was granted $116 million after 2 knee surgeries. He played 27 games the 1st 3 years of that contract then decided to bring guns to the locker room. However, due to the Lockout signed in 1999, NO CONTRACT COULD BE VOIDED EXCEPT IN THE CASE OF DEATH. Meaning the Wizards were forced to suspend him while still paying on that ridiculous contract. Owners put Arenas' situation on a long list of system issues that had to be changed. Fact: the 2 highest paid players in the league in 2007 wasnt Kobe, Lebron, Wade, Shaq, Dirk, Garnett, or even the Finals MVP Paul Pierce. It was Mcgrady and Jermaine…

Phil Jackson coached the Chicago Bulls basketball team to one of the longest winning streaks in professional sports. In his book, Sacred Hoops, he describes his approach to coaching a group of acknowledged stars. He clearly understands that simply collecting a set of outstanding players does not a championship team make. One way of understanding his approach is to think of every problem or project having components in four different spheres:…

Throughout my childhood, my father had always traveled between Los Angeles, California and Uruapan Michoacán in Mexico. He would work for six months in California and then return to Mexico for the rest of the year without a need to work. Why would a father put his family through these challenges? Besides the obvious reason of our family needing finances, we later discovered that our dad, upon reaching his thirties, was going through some sort of midlife crisis. My 15 year old brother Joe joined a gang short after my dad left back to the United States. He became difficult and refused to listen to our mother. He would stroll the the streets all night and routinely come back home with items we suspect were stolen. My parents had always pondered upon and discussed the consequences of leaving us alone, without the guidance and support of both a mother and father. But because of our financial situation, my father needed to make the sacrifice. We all needed to sacrifice something.…

“Slaveship,” by Lucille Clifton, is a free verse poem from the perspective of slaves that the white men capture and trade in the slave trade, forcing them to travel on the Middle Passage. Ironically, the ships bear the names of religious symbols and figures such as Jesus, Angel of God, and Grace of God (lines 14-15) even though the act of slavery is one of the most sinful systems in the eyes of these slaves and in the eyes of all decent human beings.…

For boys who have passed by or through the Middle School this week you will have noticed that the precinct was awash with the colour orange in the form of balloons and banners. The boys in Year 8 will, I hope, be able to tell you that this display of orange was to mark Harmony Day, an event organised by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. It is aimed at celebrating our cultural diversity and promoting tolerance and respect for racial difference.…

That man is so passionate towards his job, and without him we wouldn’t be where we are today. He literally does everything, whether it’s giving pre-game instructions, setting up practice, or watching out for all of us and making sure we are satisfied. It’s no easy job by any means, but he goes above and beyond for us. Quite frankly, he’s the whole reason I’m at this University today. He was the one who returned my emails, came to my games, and showed that he wouldn’t only care about my playing ability, but also about my well-being. Once I saw those qualities in him I knew this place would be a good fit. Now you would never see our head coach going to such lengths for us. He would rather continue to do nothing and rack up the accolades that don’t belong to him. Everyone on the team see’s this, and they’ve all agreed that if our assistant coach was in charge their decisions to transfer would have been altered.…
