Selected Poem Title: When We Two Parted
Initial Response:
What does this poem seem to be about?

This poem seems to be about a couple that has separated, and one is explaining the sorrow he/she feels.
Words: Were the words in this poem difficult or easy to understand?
Was there any word or phrase that was powerful to you?

The words in this poem were easy to understand. The word or phrase I found impacted me was “thy vows are all broken” this indicated that the couple was married. It allows for me to feel the despair the author may be feeling.
Images:
Did the poet create strong images?
What could you see, hear, smell, taste, or feel?

The poem created vivid images for me, I seen a person drowning in sorrow. I felt the heart break that followed throughout this poem.
Figurative Language:
What poetic devices were used in this poem?
What did these poetic devices do for the poem?
Did these devices help create imagery or communicate the author's feelings?

The author used personification in the phrase “That thy heart could forget.” This phrases is giving the heart the humanistic quality of forgetting.
Emotion:
What emotion was the author trying to express?

The emotion I felt the author was trying to express was depression, emptiness, and sorrow.
Structure:
How is the poem organized (lines, stanzas, etc.)?
What is unique or interesting about the structure of the poem?
Does the poem rhyme?

What is unique that I have observed is each stanza has exactly eight lines. Yes the poem does rhyme and this allows for the poem to flow smoothly.
Meaning:
What is the poem saying about life or love?
Do you agree or disagree with this message? Explain.
Are there any other reasonable ways to interpret this poem? I gathered that the poem is saying love can make you or break you. In the authors situation love has broken him/her. He/she has lost their loved one and is deeply hurt by it.
Publication:
What kind of magazine or other publication would be the best place for this type of poem?
I feel the appropriate magazine for this poem is “Love Stinks.” In this poem the author is talking about love and how he/ she is heartbroken. “Half broken-hearted To sever for years.” This confirms that the author is heartbroken and would agree to the term “love stinks.” Also on the cover of the magazine “Love Stinks” it states, “It’s OK to cry.” In the poem the author makes this statement, “When we two parted In silence and tears.” This statement indicates that the author has shed tears when the separation has occurred. So therefore the author would also agree with the statement, “it’s OK to cry.” Which makes “Love Stinks” the perfect magazine for a poem like this.

In the first paragraph alone, many important aspects of the narrator's character are revealed. It is revealed to the reader that the narrator was in love and is grieving for the woman he loved. It is also in the first paragraph where the major conflict is revealed. The major conflict, in which the narrator is involved, is his own torment from the memory of his dead wife. This is evident when the narrator says, "When I saw our room again, our bed, our furniture, everything that remains of the life of a human being after death – I was seized by such a violent attack of fresh grief that I felt like opening the window and throwing myself onto the street." Initially, the author intends the reader to feel sorry for the narrator and his loss. The thing that motivates the narrator in the conflict is his resolution to finish grieving before it consumes him. This is evident when he says, "Happy is the man whose heart forgets everything that it has contained."…

First we will explore the symbolism used in this story. There was not very much symbolism like most poems. This narrator is very blunt about the main issue, the loneliness felt by the antagonist. In the beginning the poem says “you do not have to walk on your knees” (Oliver, 1986) which symbolizes the fact that you do not have to belittle yourself or be down on yourself because of your situation. You need to rise above that and just love yourself is what is portrayed in the part of the sentence that says to let “your body love what it loves” (Oliver, 1986). Approach your problems head on. The last symbol used is the one where she says that they could tell each other their problems but that would not stop the world from going on around them. The sun will still shine and rain will still fall.…

I remember when I first experienced goosebumps raise on my arms and send a shiver through my body, simply because the words leaving the speaker's lips left such an imprint on me. I didn’t think that a simple sentence could bring tears to my eyes, could cause me to react in any physical way. I didn’t even know the author. Yet, it still amazes me anytime I react to such a poem. The emotions that the author pours into every word and every syllable is astounding. Each pause and breath tell a story on their own. I knew that I had to try. I wanted to make people feel the way like I did when I first heard them, but because it was my words that made them react.…
