ASSIGNMENT 1

1. How many distinct stages does an infant pass through between birth and 18 months? At which stage does the child / should the child start using consonants and vowels?
A: They pass through 5 distinct stages. The child should start using consonants and vowels between 20-25 weeks.

2. What do we call the type of speech is when toddlers (by the age of 2) start using 2 words together?
A: Telegraphic speech

3. At what age can children usually start to learn a second language?
A: At age 4

4. Between what ages would a TESOL teacher teach activities to “Build motor skills”?
A: Between ages 5 and 6.

5. Because children at the age of 6 enjoy learning by playing games what should a TESOL teacher incorporate in ALL lessons?
A: Activities that incorporate movement. To teach listening, speaking, reading and writing skills teachers should use fun worksheets, songs and games where children have the opportunity practice English while moving around the classroom or singing a song. It is helpful to have many activities planned and keep the class moving along from one activity to another at a good pace.

6. At what age do children begin to feel picked on and are terrified of not being liked? How should a teacher assist in overcoming this problem?
A: By the age of 7 years old children begin to feel picked on and are terrified of not being liked. A teacher should give children lots of positive attention, help children learn to initiate contact with other children, make regular contact, reward small improvements, let children make mistakes without correcting them, and encourage non-competitive games.

7. What are the four basic processes to understand how students acquire language?
A: Language Development, Social and Cultural Processes, Cognitive Development and Academic Development.
