Final Exam Part One Of all the versions of Little Red Riding Hood that we read in class, I must say, Anne Sexton’s translation of this story was absolutely my favorite. Her use of imagery, and the over-all language that she uses is truly magnificent. She boldly retells this story, but keeps true to the original story. Her modernization is a lovely example of what poetry has grown to be. Most poets these days write in free verse, it’s not uncommon to read a poem that does not rhyme at all, but it is so very common to be moved by it. I, personally, am a huge fan of poetry, old and new alike, and I am always happy to read a poem that combines both new and old techniques of writing. Anne Sexton does this unbelievably well; I am ashamed that I have not read her poetry until this point in time. But, of course, I am thankful this class has allowed my mind to curl up around another beautiful piece of literature. She uses phrases like “Many are the deceivers” which give the poem a sort of “vintage” feel without overwhelming it’s readers with language that is hard to understand. Anne Sexton gives it a modern twist by writings words like “the razor in his hand like a toothbrush, wall as anonymous as a urinal”. I was completely blown away with the beauty of this poem. It painted such a vivid picture in my mind, while still managing to tug at my heartstrings with its language. Anne Sexton achieved poetry here, and she achieved it marvelously. In this poem there really is not any specific rhythm or rhyme. The lines are filled with scattered amounts of syllables, and the words connect only through coincidence. But the use of figurative language reveals this piece as poetry. Phrases like “letting her stomach fill up with helium, letting her arms go loose as kite tails, getting ready to meet her lover a mile down Apple Crest Road in the Congregational Church parking lot”, “bedfellows watching between their feet, slits his wrist the next morning in the Algonquin’s

Armin Greder’s ‘The Island’ is a picture book published August 2007, explores the negative aspects of belonging through alienation an outsider’s perspective of not belonging. The text uncovers an undesirable experience particularly the migrant experience. It follows a strange man entering a foreign island where he is unwelcomed and quickly judged based on his appearance. The cover of the book shows an intimating barrier around the island, which looks, dark and uninviting. This wall is a metaphor of the attitudes given off by the islanders towards the man, which are also unapproachable and unpleasant. This effect brings about the feelings of alienation experienced by the man, reflecting the negative aspects of belonging to a group or community. Throughout the text the islanders are drawn additionally threatening, as they are large, dark and armed. This is contrasted with the man’s petite frame and lack of clothing leaving him vulnerable and abnormal. Through this use of size and colour a direct link can be made between the man’s inability to belong and his distinctive appearance. This portrays to the audience how much society impacts a person’s experience of belonging or not belonging. Within the text, the islander’s attitude towards the man is prejudice and hostile. As the islanders say “I’m sure he wouldn’t like it here, so far away from his own kind”, negative connotations are revealed in the words “own kind”. This immediately tells the audience that this man is unlike the rest of society, displaying the effect of appearance on a person’s ability to assimilate into a new surrounding.…

The poem completely diverts the social norm of the original little red riding hood as the little girl within the poem instead of being scared she portrays her fascination full of anticipation in the lines “what big ears he had!” “What big eyes he had!” “What teeth” which portrays her lack of nervousness which contrasts with her emotions from the original as originally she is scared. The young girl’s omniscience is portrayed in the line “away from home to a dark tangled thorny place” as this suggests that she is…

I see some rare and different qualities between the characters in these stories. First, in “The Rocking Horse Winner” the main character Paul is the son of two unlucky parents. This is shown as Paul overhears his mother talking about her unlucky streak. The young boy then starts seeing luck as money because if money and luck bring happiness, they must somehow be intertwined. In the story, it is this mindset that pushes Paul over the edge to become some sort of hero. The mother does not love Paul, much as described in the story, but when she sees the change in Paul for the worse she immediately begins to worry as most mothers would for a suffering son. The father of Paul is mentioned, but they do not say much about him, except he works in town and previously had a gambling problem. Uncle Oscar and Bassett are just riding on the coat tails of Paul, trying to hold on until something breaks.…

Throughout the semester, the Year Eight class have studied figurative language, Shakespeare, persuasive and narrative writing, as well as reviewing the role punctuation plays in ensuring clarity in writing. Chloe is a very friendly and capable student who has consistently produced work of a solid Year Eight standard. She can sometime allow herself to be distracted in class, this means that she often runs out of time to effectively edit her work. As a result of this she sometimes misses punctuation and grammatical errors that could have easily been corrected. In order to improve, Chloe will need to re-evaluate her use of class time to ensure that she leaves herself enough time to carefully edit all tasks before she submits them. I wish her all the best for next year.…
