English educational system English education will be introduced to lower grades in elementary school at no distant date. For years, Japanese people have suffered from their poor English communication skills. In this modern times where globalization is on the move, it is obvious that change in our English educational system is essential. Introducing this educational system is an epoch making reformation in Japanese academic arena. For previous English educational system placed much stress on grammar and writing skills, but this brand new method’s purpose is to place emphasis on speaking and communication skills. This reformation demands a great deal of teachers who can actually speak English, which is a quite difficult task for present Japanese society, where there are only 3 percent of which have a teaching certificate to teach English, to perform. In addition to their lack of talent, there are contentions that claim elementary school is a place to learn your mother tongue firmly. For those who believe that this proposal should not be our choice, they feel that it is inconceivable to start teaching second languages before the mother tongue takes root among students. This insistence makes perfect sense, as there are approximately 20 hours of classes a week and not 100 hours. Besides, there are many other subjects that students have to cover, such as mathematics, science, physical education for instance. In short, this system seems impractical from a rebutter’s point of view. Did you know that Japan has the largest number of English conversation school in the world? But on the other hand, Japanese are well known for their utterly poor English communication skills. In fact, Japan’s average score on TOEFL is 497 out of 677 and that is placed 110th in the world. So why are Japanese so poor at English communication skill in spite of six to 10 years of English education? This has been a long standing mystery among Japanese and also foreigners who have Japanese acquaintance. Although there are numerous factors that harm the effectiveness of English education, I believe that major reason is that too much emphasis is placed on grammar and writing skills. This has lead to inadequate English communication practice. Needless to say, this new system has many problems that needs to be solved. And it goes without saying that this system is not a panacea to our English educational system. However, in these days of globalization, Japan is expected to continue its global contribution and English communication skill is becoming more and more important aspect of not only in work but also in our daily life. It is obvious that we must reform our English educational system and consequently, this new system seems to be a step forward to the solution. In this way, I agree to introducing English education to lower grades in elementary school.
