English Argument
Argument of Longer School Days

Longer and shorter school days have been, since long ago, a controversial subject. Now, Michael Gove is trying to lengthen school days and shorten holidays, causing a row between kids and their parents. FOR Firstly, longer school days, would mean that parents, who have long work hours, will be able to maintain their personal and professional life well, due to the fact that they will not need to leave work early due to caring responsibilities. They will work without worry, because the children will be in a safe environment, not watching TV and being lazy, but learning. Secondly, schools days, which are longer, are helpful for the child(s) education due to him/her being able to stay in school for longer therefore learning more. This will hep our economy, in long term, because the whole generation will be smarter meaning less poverty and more innovation for the country and for the world. Thirdly, narrowing the achievement gap, where affluent families supplement their children’s educations with private classes, camps, and tutors, low-income students fall further and further behind. Giving more help to students who are not as bright as others will solve this. This is proved by, “In the year after Massachusetts tested the Expanded Learning Time Initiative, which added about two hours to the school day, participating schools narrowed the achievement gap in English by 35% and science by almost 15%.” AGAINST Firstly, longer days of school would mean more pressure on to teachers as well as students. The teachers, will need a higher wage and will have a higher stress due to more working hours, and might not want to be in the profession. The higher wage will put a strain on the economy, which is already in a bad form due to recession. There will be less freedom for teachers, as they will need to mark work and have nearly no free time. Secondly, the amount of time spent in school is not the most important factor, which differentiates between schools, but also the efficiency of the students and teachers themselves. A recent study had shown factory works to produce the same amount of toys, whether it is 3 days or 5 days. So this shows that the amount of time, in the factory (school), does not help, but the efficiency and hard work you put in yourself. Thirdly, longer school days, will make children and adults have less social time and less family time due to longer days of schools, this will be caused due to extra curricular activities children have and homework set by teachers. Furthermore, this will reduce sleeping times, which are hazardous to children, and may cause insomnia. In conclusion, my own opinion, is that, the school days should stay the same, due to the effects it will have on teachers and families. But, to energize and motivate children to do their best in every subject, so more time in the school is spent better, so it is more efficient.

Changing the five day school week has been argued for and against due the controversy as to whether or not it would actually be beneficial to students and teachers. When approaching the idea, many people would like to believe that five day school weeks are the most efficient and productive way to educate our youth. What is often overlooked, however, is that it is causing students to dread school more than they already do, and lessen their willingness to be in or attentive at school. Not only this, but many teachers easily get behind on either grading or lesson planning, while the school could actually save money when switching to this schedule. By refreshing the way the school schedule has previously been, we can address the issue of exhausted students who don 't truly learn anything, teachers who are overwhelmed with work and the economic questions within America 's schools. Providing both students and teachers with a more equal week of break and school time by having Wednesdays off will make students more willing to attend school, give the teachers time to furnish their lesson plans and give the school a break in costs.…

It can be hard for us to consistently give our best effort in school if there is not a longer weekend. It can be difficult for us to wake up early in the morning, before there is light outside, and efficiently work for seven hours at school. A longer weekend can help us gain more sleep time and relax from our previous week at school. Some of us may use this extra break to catch up on school work. Sometimes we may need a longer weekend to go on small vacations. A longer weekend can us time to pursue a job to earn some extra money for the many things that us teenagers must have. If schools started at 9 am they wouldn't get out until around 4 pm, but if schools started at 7:30 am kids could get out of school at 2:30 pm. It would be better if they went earlier and got out earlier because it can give kids time to be productive and do other things that they may need to get done after school. Next, it would be less convenient for the kids to do other activities after school. Let's say you do a sport after school, it would be pretty hard if you got out of school at a…

I think that starting the school day later would greatly benefit the students and teachers. if we started school at about say nine thirty in the morning instead of eight thirty or earlier, that would mean that most students wouldn't need to be awake in the morning till almost seven thirty to eight thirty and some kids could even wake up a little later then that depending on where they live. granite it is proven that high school students only need six to eight hours of sleep each night but there is always that few that never get the six to eight hours of sleep.…

One of the biggest changes that would come with year round schooling would be increased use of the school building during times where it was traditionally not used at all. The most obvious time would be during the summer months. Costs for having to run the air conditioning during the summer and heating during the winter would shoot up. This would more so affect larger public schools who adopt the staggered class approach. Since the classes are staggered, when some students leave for their break, others will be returning for it. This would ensure that the school is in constant use all year round, excluding special occasions such as holidays. This would not only increase the costs for maintaining the school property with the air conditioning and heating, but it would increase the costs for school lunches. With some students always being present means there must be food everyday of the year. The money to pay for lunches, one way or another, will have to come from the parents sending their kids to school. Another way parents would be affected economically is through rising house prices. Studies show that the cost to purchase and maintain a house in a neighborhood near a good school is much higher than house costs near schools that don't produce very good students. One of the benefits…

In conclusion, if the school start time is pushed back, our after school activities are pushed back, we will get home later and we will have less time to study and we will get less sleep. Starting school later in the morning does NOT give us more time to sleep. We will be forced to stay up later to study for the big test, to finish the project, and to do the thirty math problems we haven’t made a dent in yet because we haven’t had TIME. We will be waking up an hour earlier to finish homework we were too tired to get done the night before and we will end up getting less…

Moreover, having students stay in school for more days can help the school meet its needs. A better explanation would be schools would have no problems, economically.
